Two Under 2

2 rear facing carseats=new car.

Anyone else going to be dealing with this?

DD and this baby will be about 12.5 months apart. With the new car seat recommendations, we'll have two rear facing seats. I drive a little Nissan Sentra and cannot fit a seat directly behind my seat. (I'd be pushed up way too far).

So, it looks like I'll need to invest in a larger vehicle. Boo.

Re: 2 rear facing carseats=new car.

  • have you tried the Combi Coccoro?  It goes RF up to 33 pounds and FF up to 40, it's a smaller seat, and it fits well into compact cars.  I got mine on albee baby for $160 I think.

  • I'm 5'9, have a compact car, and have DS RF sitting behind me. I also have a pretty large carseat (myride 65).

Are you sure you're installing the seat properly?

I'm pretty sure we are! I'll have to investigate a bit.

  • We have a VW Jetta and were able to fit a Evenflo Tirumph 65 Advance RFing behind the driver's seat and still allow my 6' DH to drive comfortably.

What kind of car seat do you have? We had to try a few seats before we found one with a short enough shell.

Ooh, and if you dont' want to get a new car, the sunshine kids radian is the smallest RF carseat I've ever heard about and it gets good reviews. That's what we're doing for DD's carseat when we move her to a convertible.

  • We have a Honda Accord and originally had a Sunshine Kids Radian. It's a very slim design and we could have fit three of them side by side front facing. However, when we tried to install it rear facing we had to move the front seats all the way up. We were able to fit a Britax Roundabout rear facing with the appropriate angle.

We actually got a Nissan Quest and no longer keep a car seat in our Accord. Unfortunately, my son is tall with a long torso so he outgrew the Roundabout around 12 months. We now have a Safety 1st Complete Air. He's rear facing and will remain that way until he exceeds the height limit.

Even with a mini van it will be an awkward fit having two rear facing seats. We will not be able to get past on either side to sit in the third row.

I would keep LO#2 in an infant car seat on the driver's side for as long as you can if you need to hold off on purchasing another vehicle.

  • Mammabear, Do you have problems with your Coccoro moving every time you tighten the straps? I feel like I haven't installed it right even though I followed the instructions (and looked up installation videos to watch online). It just seems to move so much with the round bottom! Any tips?

  • I know exactly what you are going through. I also had a Nissan Sentra and just had to trade it in (we got a Mazda5). There isn't a rear facing car seat I could find that I could install behind the driver's seat and still have enough leg space for me to drive (I'm pretty tall and the backseat just doesn't have enough space).

  • How do you have it installed?  lap belt only or lap and shoulder belt?  We have LO with the lap and shoulder belt and we use the "lock off clip" to make sure it stays tight...  I did kneel on the seat while pulling the belt snug to make sure it was sinking into the seat enough, it doesn't move around at all.

  • Currently it's in my car with the LATCH belt but no shoulder belt. We have tried it in DH's car with the lap belt and it moves the same. When we tried to add the shoulder belt it made the whole seat flip toward the back seat very easily. Maybe we aren't pushing down hard enough. I'll have to try that. Thanks so much!

I'm thinking it must be the car then! I may try taking the base out and just using the seat belt to install it. I'm not a tall person at all- so I feel like it should fit. I was totally on top of the wheel though. There's no way it would have worked that way.

I'd also like to have it on the drivers side right now so that it's easier to get DD in and out. (We've always had it in the middle but being pregnant is making that difficult).

  • We had the seat on the passenger side. We couldn't have it in the middle because we'd have to have both front seats pushed up then and it would be impossible for either of us to drive the car (I'm 5'9" and DH is is 6'2"). I think it's just the configuration of the car.
