nbr-at all: would you eat your dog?

dh loves watching those "i survived whatever" shows. there was one on the other night where some dude got lost in the amazon. he was starving and had malaria and on the verge of death. he decided to behead his dog and eat him. it was really disturbing b/c the guy was just so matter of fact about it. i had to leave the room.

i know his situation was dire and it's hard to say what i would have done but i just dont think i could kill my dog for food. had the dog died first by something else then yes i would eat her.

what would you do?

  • Nope.

    I couldn't do it.

  • I don't have a dog; I'm a cat person. I would rather die then eat any of my animals. To me, my cat isn't an animal, and I'm not his owner. We are two personalities. I always consider him my roommate. I think it's ignorant to think you can "own" an animal. I'm crazy though. I give animals way more respect than most humans.

I would start by not taking a boston terrier into the amazon.  I can barely get her to leave the deck to poop.

But I honestly have no idea what I would do in such a dire situation.  I would probably want to end pup's suffering before she starved to death.

well apparently the dog would go forage for food when the guy was sleeping, so the dog was healthy and still fat. and that was the reasoning for deciding to eat him.

i agree though, i have no idea why he had his dog with him in the first place.

  • I've never been in the position where I even had to consider eating one or both of my dogs. I love them, but if it came down to my life or theirs, I'm saving my life.

Hopefully they would die first though. Then I wouldn't have to feel so guilty.

  • I'd probably eat my dog if it meant me living or dying. And chances are, a domesticated dog wouldnt last long in that situation, even with their owner, and especially without them. So really, you could assume that if you didnt eat the dog to survive, the dog would die soon anyway.

i know, its grim. but it's something new to discuss right? right!

This.  I love my dog and we do think of him as a member of the family, but I'd totally put myself first in this situation.  Beheading him would be the worst part, but at that point, I'm sure you're so desperate.  It's the same idea as those people that have to saw off a limb when they get stuck somewhere.  The thought seems impossible, but when you're in the position, you have no choice.

  • I think I saw that show.

I was disgusting. Didn't the dog travel after being separated from him in a rapids or something and somehow come find him again? What a nice reward, to be eaten!

Seriously, that made me absolutely ill, especially since the guy puked it all up anyways.

I do not think that I could ever do that. I could never kill my dog, let alone eat her raw flesh. I think that I would rather suffer.

yeah i missed the first part of how he got lost. i started watching right as he was reunited with the dog. i didn't know he barfed him back up anyways!  i left the room when they showed him go over to the dog with a knife.

no, reenactment type deal as the real life guy narrated. but they made it pretty realistic and gross.

AWWWWWWW :(:(:(  That's so sad.  If my dog and I were lost in the amazon, she'd likely look for me til she found me, too.  The other 3 that we own, probably not so much.  The one that found me I wouldn't eat, she only weighs like 10lbs so if she survived to find me she would deserve to live, too.  If I came across one of my four, and they had already passed away, I'd try to build a fire and get over my fears if it were life or death.  But not because I'd want to, only because I know they're not poisonous.

    Oh gotcha

  • My will to survive is very strong, so yes I would eat my dog. I would hope my dog would die instead of me having to kill him/her.

  • Well, this is a  tough one.

I think I would if it were the absolute last resort (not even worms or insects around). I'd probably eat leaves before I do that.

My eyes well up everytime they show that little kitten Nathaniel with that cast on his leg and his little sad face.

Apparently My FIL had a mean dog years ago and the dog was such a mean MF - if this had happened to them, I think the dog would have eaten my FIL!!  No way the old man would have made it!
  • The thought of having to do that really disturbs me.  Our dog is a part of the family.  I guess if it came down to it, you have to do, what you have to do to survive, but I seriously don't know if I would be able to do it.
