Intro and U/S question

Hi everyone,

I have been lurking for a while but decided to finally post because I have a question.  My husband returned from deployment about 4 weeks ago and we got pregnant the day after he got home.  We were very suprised but also excited.  I am in PA school and am constantly worrying about this new baby because of what I have learned in school.

I was nervous to post until I had been to the doctor but yesterday I had bloodwork done and my first u/s (5w 4d).  My hcg quant was 9205 and on ultrasound we were able to see the gestational sac and yolk sac.  He thought the fetal pole was possibly hiding behing the yolk sac.  He wants to do a repeat u/s and we initally scheduled it for Tuesday.  However, I have had a conflict with school every other morning of the week and am attempting to move it to Monday.  My question is, is this too soon for a repeat u/s?  I'd like to do it later but my schedule is making it tough.  I know I should be able to see a heartbeat about 6 weeks and I would be 6 w 1d by period dating.  But I would love to hear from anyone's personal experience.

 Thanks!

Re: Intro and U/S question

  • Just to add on, I have been doing a little more research based on when my LMP was and when my husband returned and I am starting to think I am only 5w 3d which means at the u/s Monday I would only be 5 w 6d.

  • It is best to wait a week between ultrasounds, which I know is hard for multiple reasons but doing it sooner could just cause additional worry and uncertainty.  A week in between should be plenty of time for things to change.
  • I went at 5 weeks 3 days and they only saw the sac and yolk sac. I went back Tuesday when I was 6 weeks 1 day and they saw a fetal pole and  a heart beat. Hope that helps!

  • The same thing happened at my first dating u/s and they made me wait 3 weeks. It sucked, but I had no reason to believe anything was wrong (no bleeding etc) and it was fine. I'm glad I waited longer b/c I got to see more of a 'baby' rather than just a blob. If you go again right away, it still might be too early to see much.
