I'm taking a meal to a mom with a gluten allergy tomorrow. I was going to do bbq shredded chicken in the crock pot with fixins. (Baked potatoes, probably beans, a salad, buns and GF bread for her) Does BBQ sauce have gluten in it? I'm using Sweet Baby's Ray's sweet & spicy. It doesn't say gluten-free, but I don't see anything in the ingredients that would lead me to believe there's gluten in it. Is there a website that lists ingredients that contain gluten that I can check it against?
Thanks for your help!
Re: NBR: Gluten-free question
just look in the ingredients to see if it contains any wheat. that should let you know whether there is gluten in it.
It's not always that easy. Many labels are not up to date with the current allergy labeling standars. And there are many many hidden sources of wheat in foods. Modified food starch for example!
I looked at the item in question and the only thing I saw as a possible concern was vinegar however it is now considered a "safe" item. linky
No wheat in the ingredients. I know there are other things that contain gluten, though, like rye and barley. And I'm sure there are derivatives of these ingredients that I don't know about. I'm just trying to triple-check so I don't cause her major discomfort.
Thanks Taytee! I wouldn't have even thought to worry about vinegar. Whew.
I have a GF friend and guru - let me check with her.
You also need to be careful of cross-contamination -so nothing that you are cooking can be handled by anything that may have any trace amounts of gluten badness on it!
thanks taytee! that's super helpful! my sil is allergic to gluten and i guess i've been checking the ingredients wrong. it seems like there is gluten in so many things you wouldn't think about.
Thanks. I didn't think about the cross-contamination, either. I'm going to have to be very careful!
