massage in 1st tri?

So I got a deal from living social a while back for a 90 min massage, well I never got around to using it before I found out I was pregnant and now I am wondering what the rules are about getting a massage in 1st tri. I *really* dont want to have to get a "prenatal" massage because lets be honest, they just arent as good but obviously I dont want to do something that could be harmful for the baby.

I havent seen the midwives yet and I dont really feel like playing phone tag with their office to have this question answered (which they might not even answer since I havent been seen by them for this pregnancy yet) so can someone tell me the rule? Should I wait until I am in 2nd tri? Ideally I would get it sometime soon when I am still comfortable lying on my stomach. Plus I dont know if this coupon can be transferred to a prenatal massage so will I just be out the money I spent on it?

Re: massage in 1st tri?

  • I was scheduled to get a massage the day I found out I was pregnant so I wrote that down on the paperwork that I was 4 weeks pregnant.  They said I wasn't allowed to get one unless it was prenatal.  So I had to get a facial instead!  It was still nice!  That was just my experience not sure what the exact rule is!

  • I work in the same office as a chiro who also does massages...

They told me they will not do it the first tri.

  • I got a great prenatal massage at Mitchell's when I was about 8 weeks along and it was great. The pillow-type contraption they lay you in would be super comfy now, or in your second trimester (when you'll really need it!)

See if they have that available...either way, enjoy your massage!

  • My OB rolled her eyes when I told her that a place wouldn't do a massage on me at 7 weeks unless it was prenatal. She said that's ridiculous and that massages are perfectly safe and they force it on you because of liability reasons. But that's my OB, you should check with yours.

Honestly thats what I was thinking...I dont see how rubbing my body would hurt a baby that is the size of a sesame seed....I would like to get one before my inevitable morning sickness kicks in because once it does I wont want anyone near me, touching me and the smells will kill me hmmm....

This. My mom is a massage therapist (for as new-age hippie as she is at times, she knows her anatomy and physiology pretty darn well!) and has been practicing for almost 10 years, specializing in pregnant women. She does them in 1st tri, I had a few in 1st tri, and my OB said it was fine.

Supposedly there are pressure points that can put you into labor once you're farther along, but if you're going to someone who knows what they're doing they can avoid those areas (I think they're mostly on the feet?). They never worked for me, anyway ;)

  • My BFF is a massage therapist and she gave me a massage in the 1st tri with no problems.  She did say there was some area she avoided but I don't remember what it was.
  • I got massages throughout my pregnancy. I think I started using their body sytem pillow, which has a big cutout hole for the belly, around 16 weeks. Before that I just did the regular massage and laid on my belly and it was fine. :) Just let them know you are pregnant.
