I'm a first time mom to be and want to get some recommendations from you lovely ladies about books on babies. I'm looking for basic care information, as well as advice on sleep, breastfeeding, and anything else you think a new mom should know. One book that encompasses everything, or several books would be great.
Thanks much!
Re: Visiting from 3rd Tri - Baby book recs?
I can't give you any book reviews but I can tell you ( since I learned this today and it's fabulous ) try using HBOTB....Happiest Baby On The Block.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6KnVPUdEgQHeading Home with your Newborn is great for basic info. Happiest Baby on the Block, but get the DVD so you can see the strategies visually (and they really do work).
I'm a big Babywise believer but the book is controversial. I don't subscribe to all of the ideas in it, but I swear by the eat, play, sleep routine and waking to feed every 2.5/3 hours the first few weeks (as well as keep baby awake for full feedings). For me it made things much more predictable, and my first son was STTN by 8 weeks old.
Howdy! I am a first time mom too and we made a trip to Barnes & Nobles this past weekend to pick up some books that had been recommended to us. Babywise, The Happiest Baby on the Block, and The Baby Whisperer. These are about soothing fussy babies, from what I've read so far.
We also recieved Baby 411, which is a great general care and information book that has info about almost every subject related to babies. I see this as being a great reference book.
I look forward to other mom's recommendations!
This! This is the most thorough book we have. I refer to it for a lot of things. The advice in this book seems to very closely mirror the advice my pediatrician gives us, so I trust it.
Baby 411 is a great quick reference. Happiest Baby on the Block is great for newborn advice. I've also read Healthy Sleep Habits - Happy Child, Babywise (although some advice is a bit extreme in general its a good book) and Baby Whisperer. I've also heard good things about the No Cry Sleep Solution but I haven't read that one.
I'd try to avoid any of the What to Expect books, they are very alarmist in my opinion.
ETA - and The Nursing Mother's Companion is a great book for breastfeeding advice, I even took it to the hospital with us.
