Babies on the Brain

Join me for coffee and Induction Talk (plus update)

::passes out coffee and Doughnuts::

Goodmorning. Got sent to the hospital last night: blood pressure is up all of a sudden, white blood counts are up higher than normal for a pregnant woman and I now have a fluid cyst on the tip of my cervix. Found wierd sore spots they didn't like (left side of ribs, along the shin bone on the right leg, right side of body is swelling but not left) Still about 80% effaced but no dialation. Baby is doing fine and measuring about 8lbs on U/S.

I have to go back to the Dr. this a.m. for more tests as they aren't sure what they want to do about the elevated white blood counts since they can't find a UTI, Kidney Infect or fever to go with it so they don't know how to treat it.

Depending on labs, they will decide if they should start labor due to it, or give my body a chance and wait till Monday to induce. Since I am not dialating at all, they are hesitant to induce and increase my risk for c-section if my cervix doesn't respond to the drugs.

Thoughts/Experiences. I'm nervous about induction now. I really really don't want a c-section but I want my baby safe. I'm tired and confused. Talk to me while I try to defuzz my brain this morning.

Re: Join me for coffee and Induction Talk (plus update)

  • I hope they can figure out what's causing the elevated white count soon.  You're so close to meeting baby Buckin.  Good luck!

  • What is their induction plan? I mean, yes, a csection can happen but it could go well too do if you need to be induced you need to be induced. I was induced at 38 weeks with a long closed cervix and delivered in about 8 hours.
  • I wasn't dilated at all when I was induced, and it took 36 hrs, but it worked for me though there were times I wished they would just cut the boys out.

After having been through it I would ask for a round or two of cervadil first.  If that does nothing I would probably not go through with the pit, if it were me.

  • Ps. I made sure to visualize my cervix opening like a flower during labor.
  • We didn't lay out the exact induction plan but they did say start out with Cervidril and see how I respond before doing Pit. Said depending on the person etc. depends on how many doses of each/diff meds they give over periods of time.

He did mention that it can take awhile (actually said 36 hours) for the drugs to work sometimes so they just have to administer and then monitor and see how it goes.

  • Oh gosh that's a lot going on! No induction experience, but my dr always emphasized that being effaced is just as important as being dilated and the day before I went into labor I was 80% effaced but less than an inch dilated. My dr believes once you are effaced you can dilate much more quickly. Hopefully the can figure out what is going on this morning.

    Thank you for the coffee.

I'm sorry this is complicated for you right now.  I can tell you a friend of mine had a similar experience (her WBC were elevated without explanation).  She wound up spiking a fever and, as a result, had to have a c-section and her baby went (briefly) to the NICU.  The baby was fine and is a completely healthy three year old now, but I know friend would have preferred not to have her baby in the NICU at all.

Of course, every baby is different, but I am sharing her experience with you completely in the interest of giving you information toward whatever decision you make.  Go eat some pineapple, get freaky with Mr. Buck, and try to get that cervix movin.  Have you tried EPO?

    What is EPO?

We have been walking about a mile and a half a day and getting our groove on. Not working! LOL

  • I was induced because my water had broken and nothing was going on.  They started the pitocin at around 9:00 on Wednesday night and by 11:20 a.m. the following morning I had my son in my arms.  No c-section.

I'm sure your doctor knows that you don't want a section, but I keep hearing stories of women whose doctors pushed them for a c-section for no reason other than things weren't moving along fast enough.  I was fortunate in that my doctor would let me go all day and all night so long as baby and I were fine - she didn't have a schedule.  Have a talk with your doctor about that - that should go a long way towards easing your concerns.

Most of all though, listen to your gut feeling on this.  Good luck, mama!

  • I'm just a lurker, but wanted to share. I was induced at 37 weeks due to gallbladder problems (I had found out I had gallstones on the day I found out I was preganant... ironically enough 2 years ago today). By the end of my pregnancy my white blood cell count was constantly elevated  and they felt the need to induce so that I could have my gallbladder taken out(which I did 2 days after I had the baby). Needless to say I was not dialated at all! The used cervadil (sp?) starting at 5 in the evening, and started pitocin (Again sp?) at about 7 in the morning. I had my baby girl at 5 that evening. So just wanted to give you hope that just because your induced and not dialated doesn't always mean a csection! Best of luck to you!
  • Dr. just called. I'm off to have more bloodwork done.

They went ahead and scheduled induction for Monday morning 6:30a.m. to get it on the schedule but of course if they feel we need to go sooner due to bloodwork we will but they wanted it down.

Will chat with you girls when I get back home!

EPO is evening primrose oil.  My MW gave it to me, it helps soften the cervix.  She had me start taking it at 37 weeks bc they were concerned about my blood pressure.  Who knows if it helped me dilate or not, but I had a very smooth delivery!

I hope you and your dr get this figured out.  It's going to be fine and he's going to be perfect!

FWIW, I did this too.  I don't know if that is what helped so much but my delivery was the easiest part of my pregnancy.

  • @ hospital at about 7am on a Friday morning, pit started because I was having too many contractions for cervadil.  Never really got "painful" only a TON of pressure.  Feels like you are going to have the biggest poop of your life.  Baby delivered Sunday morning at 1:59AM due to failure to progress (3cm).  Water was broken saturday morning 6am.

Recovery was not bad I thought.  Spinal hurt less than an IV.  One of the worst parts was taking my first PP poop about 5 days after c/s.  Start taking stool softners your first day out of surgery, you will regret it later.  Morphine pump=some harrrrrd poop.

My story is very similar to this. It sounds like your doc is starting out with the right attitude, not just saying 'induce and just get the baby out fast.' From what you said here, it sounds like they will be trying hard to avoid a section.

GL love, I am so excited for you! It sounds like you are in good hands, and at the end of the day no matter what happens as long as you have a happy healthy baby in your arms, that's all that matters.

  • I hope they figure out what's going on and you can meet your baby soon!

I was induced on my due date with DD. She wasn't growing anymore so they felt it was better to have her out. They started pit and broke my water at 7 a.m., epi at 11 a.m., she was born at 2:47 p.m. I was 75% effaced and 3 cm dilated when I arrived at the hospital.

I wish you the best of luck!!

All of this.  Wish I could offer some input but I'm finding this thread as helpful as you most likely.

    Good Luck!  *hugs*

  • I was induced at 38w6d due to insulin dependent GD. I was completely NOT favorable for induction, and the whole process took 56 hours (38 hours of actual labor). I didn't respond to the first round of cervadil except to start having very sporadic contractions. A few hours of pit and the contractions were still all over the place, so we turned it off and did another round of cervadil, which finally got me to 2 cm. Broke my water which got me to 4 cm, where I stalled and had really intense back labor. Got the epi, slept for a while, woke up at 8 cm and felt the baby drop (weird feeling!). Once she dropped I was a 10 in about 20 mins, pushed for another 20 and met our beautiful little girl!

All in all, it was a looooong process because I had made zero progress before the induction, but it was a pretty great experience and if I had to do it over I'd do it the same way.

I hope they can figure out your white blood cell count and that your induction goes smoothly!

  • I'm a huge fan of induction.  But I'm a control freak.

If we have another child I would much rather have an induction than to go spontaneously.

My only suggestion would be.... if thye get you all he way to the max dose of pitocin and you get "stuck" and they offer to break you water.  Get the epi first!

They broke my water and I went right into transition I went from 4-10cm 40 minutes.  They were having trouble getting the epi in, and it took about 40 minutes to get it working well.

Don't be scared though, in hindsight it wasn't bad at all. I said I would through the same labor every day, becase the end result well worth it.  Pregnancy on the other hand, I'm not a fan of.

    Good luck!

  • OH OH, I have more advice!

When they offer you a sleeping pill and to take LO to the nursery, say yes to both!

I wanted to bond with Amanda, but looking back I could have used a little sleep since I haven't had a decent night in well over a year.

  • My induction led to a c/s, but that's b/c my cervix is a real biitch.  Of the 5 other friends of mine IRL who've been induced, 4 managed to have vaginal births, so I am hopeful for you!

GL Buck I am SO excited for you!

  • I agree with EPO, too! If I'd known more, I would have "prepared" my body ahead of time.

Cervadil is a good prostin to use, too. Also wanted to add that *most* people I see induced w/medical cause will usually deliver vaginally (if not too sick)--esp if postdates. Your body kicks in after it gets started. Glad your OB is watching you closely & on the same page as you. Let us know what he says. GL!

Buckin - good luck to you. I will be thinking of you today & hope that all goes OK with your b/w

  • Thanks everybody! The stories/experiences of vaginal delivery after induction make me feel a lot better! My dr's and I are definitely on the same page of wanting to avoid a c-sec if at all possible and we are willing to wait it out for a lengthy time as long as baby is doing fine once drugs are administered.

I am having pretty good contractions including ones in the back but they are just so sporatic and with no dialation they are still considered BH I guess.

Waiting on Labwork....should be here after lunch.
