Carpal Tunnel due to water retention

I have really bad Carpal Tunnel in both hands and can only sleep on my back. Being 5 moths pregnant this is not going to work for long. Has anyone else had this and had the operation to snip the ligament? Any advice on what I can do to try to ease the symptoms, which basically is terrible pain in my hands when I lay on either side? Has anyone tried diuretics? I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks

Re: Carpal Tunnel due to water retention

  • I actually had Carpal Tunnel release surgery for both of my wrists within a three month period.  I used special wrist braces on both hands at night before I had the surgeries. You can get those at any drug store. I understand your pain and I'm sure you are losing sleep with the pregnancy and pain associated with Carpal Tunnel. When I was evaluated, my carpal tunnel was the worst it could be because I let it go for too long..at that point I was losing muscle in my hands. I would just get it checked out and an opinion from your doctor. I will say the result of the surgery was amazing; the tingling, aching feeling was gone immediately.

    Good Luck!

  • I had it with DS (started around 15wks) and already with this baby. I've never had a problem before... It's pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. It went away shortly after DS was born.
I would highly recommend the wrist/hand braces they sell specifically for carpal tunnel... You can find them at Walgreens, CVS! Etc. Sleep with them on and wear them during the day when you need them. After just using them a couple of nights I noticed a huge improvement. GL

  • Oh and definitely don't take a diuretic... Its more due to the 50% more blood you have while pregnant than water retention.

  • I have it in both wrists due to the pregnancy. I started wearing a brace and keeping my arms elevated (even on your side it's possible if you use pillows) and I don't have any problems anymore. If you are worried about the water retention, cut down on salty foods. Good luck, hun! Wink

  • Thank you so much for all your advice! I'm off to get the hand braces, but may also consider the surgery as the pain is getting a bit ridiculous. Really appreciate your advice!
