Random questions for moms of kids ages 1+

Okay these are kind of stupid questions that should be obvious but I feel like so many things with Nicholas are forced to be different than kids his age b/c of his RSS (mainly eating things and some other) that I would like an idea about what is typical (? dunno if thats the right word).

Okay, when did you stop putting your kiddos in onesies? Obviously I know kids wear onesies as undershirts for a while but like, in the summer months, when did your child transition to wearing t-shirts and bottoms instead of onesies and bottoms (shorts/pants)? Nicholas is still wearing 0-3 month and some 3-6 month (kind of big) but I like to try and dress him his age so people treat him appropriately. Should I look for more outfits that come with matching t-shirts vs. a onesie w/ pants or shorts?

What age did you begin to cut down on naps? Nicholas can go without napping (and he has to some days) but the days he is able to nap he still does a pretty long (2 hour or so) morning nap and about an hour long afternoon nap (this one is a little more iffy about whether he will do it or not. Should I just keep letting him nap that much until its obvious he doesnt need it? I hate that the good nap is in the morning b/c its going to limit us this summer with outdoor activities.

What should I put him in for swimming/the pool? He is finally big enough to really enjoy going to the pool and he is a little fish in the bathtub (likes putting his face in the water, etc.) I feel like the safety stuff they normally make for kids his age will be HUGE on him...do they make water wings for kids that are 0-3? lol What about swim diapers? He can wear a size 3 normal diaper but I have to do them really tight (he needs them for absorbency) how will that work with swim diapers that you cant adjust? Should I buy a cloth swim diaper?

Sorry these are so random but these questions have been on my mind lately and thought maybe you all would have some input. TIA!

Re: Random questions for moms of kids ages 1+

  • We still have onesies for some outfits.  Usually 2T and bigger are where outfits stop coming with onesies for shirts.

I miss nap time.  We used to nap twice a day, but a round 15 months she dropped to one nap a day.  By 18-20 months there were no naps.  :0(.

Swimming-they should have swim diapers his size.  We had Olivia in the pool at 6-9 months.  We usually just kept her in one of those floats with the canopy on them that they sit in.  At 18 months ( her second summer) we had  her in one of those suits with floats built in to it and added the swimmies some times.

With Justin, he wore onesies pretty much till he was around 2.  In the summertime, he wore them less because it was cooler, but if he had a cute outfit that came with a onesie, I just went with it.  I like them because I hate when shirts ride up, and it keeps the diaper covered.  Just a neatness thing, I guess.  The reality is, they don't sell them in sizes above 24 months much, probably to facilitate potty training.

Tyler has some one-piece rompers (shorts outfits) that I can't wait for him to wear and to me, those are kinda like onesies.

What age did you begin to cut down on naps?

I think a lot of this depends on the child.  I wouldn't mess with a good nap thing unless I had to, out of necessity.  Justin naturally transitioned himself to one nape a day, after lunch, around a year old.  He still takes a 2 hr nap most days, between 1-3 PM.  He rarely naps any other time unless he's sick or somehow off schedule.

Tyler started shortening his long morning nap when he was around 11 months old, so I just rode out the storm with him for a couple of weeks and had him skip his morning nap and wait till after lunch.  Once he got used to not going down in the morning, he transitioned easily to a nap after lunch for 2-3 hrs.  He is still going strong on that schedule at 18 months.  I knew that's where he was headed though, so that's why I didn't feel bad making the change for him.

I can't help with the swimming question, we don't get many opportunities to do that.  :)

  • 1.  Henry will be 2 in 2 months and still wears them.  He wears size 12-18 months depending on the brand.  I imagine we'll stop when they don't have them in his size anymore (24 months I think is the biggest I've ever seen).  I like them for hanging out around the house (keeps him from taking off his diaper... he prefers to be naked as much as possible).  I also like them in summer... easy and keeps him cool... And I like them under outfits so his belly doesn't hang out :)

    2. Henry transitioned from 2 shorter naps to 1 longer nap (after lunch) between 12 and 15 months.... He's 22 months now and won't be stopping any time soon.  The child needs his nap or he acts like a big jerk come dinner time.

    3. I like cloth swim diapers (we have anImse Vimse and a Bummis Swimmi, they're only like $15 and as cute as a swim suit).  I also like naked babies (if we're home and using our little baby pool).  I don't think disposable swim diapers do anything other than catch poop.  They don't absorb water, how on earth would they absorb pee :)

  • Okay, when did you stop putting your kiddos in onesies?  I didn't buy any onsies once Cedric was a year old.  Of course he wears them under his clothes, but not as the shirt.  I just don't like the look of them, so he hasn't worn them for awhile.  I do think that the t-shirts do make the look older, so you might want to go with them.

What age did you begin to cut down on naps?  At 12 months I cut back to one nap.  (Mostly this was because I babysit 2 older kids and wanted them on the same naptimes).   Cedric only sleeps for 1-2 hours for his one nap, but he has never napped much.  I slowly moved his morning nap later and later and eventually dropped  the pm nap.  He now lays down for his nap between 12 and 1 pm.

What should I put him in for swimming/the pool?  I don't think that the disposable small swim diapers will fit your LO, since they don't adjust.  But maybe if his swimsuit also has the mesh you would be ok maybe.  They are not made to keep the pee in (and they don't!), just the poo.  Last year I also used some washable swimdiapers and they worked well.  They come in all sizes so you should be able to find some that work well for you.

    Hope some of this helps:)

  • The summer he turned 1 (end of August), he wore rompers.  He pretty much didn't wear onesies after that simply because he was walking and fighting me at diaper changes.  Not having to snap anything (and just pull shorts/pants up) was way easier.

As for naps, every kid is different.  My son almost never napped twice/day, so he kept one nap/day until about 23 months.

As for swimming...  we were either at the kiddie pool (super shallow end) or in one of those animal floaters (legs in and he can float).  We just used swim diapers since they worked for us with swim trunks.
