Babies: 6 - 9 Months

weaning question

I've been doing what I call the slow wean - and I only pump once a day and nurse at night. My normal pumping time is usually finishing up right around 4pm.

My problem is getting over the hump from pumping once day to not at all. I am still pumping because it's uncomfortable being full when I pick up E from daycare and then getting through the whole non-stop evening routine.

So do you recommend I, pump at the same time, but for half the amount of time - just enough to make it comfortable? Do I pump earlier? Or do I just suck it up for the few days, and pump after E goes to bed, making it later and later?

Andplusalso, it might help you know that we do normally go with formula feeding at bedtime and the first waking (11ish).

My goal is to only nurse from about midnight to waking, while she's still not STTN, and then I'll wean completely.

Thanks - and sorry if this is rambling. Oh, and it will be a post n run, but I'll be back later to see what you recommend.

Re: weaning question

  • I would say that if you don't need to be full to nurse LO at night you could probably just cut down the time you pump around 4pm. Eventually you're body is going to adjust to not producing milk at that time.

If you don't mind my asking, why are you cutting out nursing at bedtime?

  • I just did the same thing, and honestly I just toughed it out for a few days and threatened DH with various degrees of torture if he touched the ladies! It only took a few days and now I am comfortable all day, and S only nurses over night. GL!
