April 2011 Moms

BTDT moms - insurance question

I'm trying to work out a new insurance plan for LO and myself.  Cobra has cost us an arm and leg, but we've kept it to pay for all of the delivery/appts so far.  The recommended plan will cover unlimited office visits and all of LO's immunizations.  The cheaper plan will cover 4 yearly office visits and no immunizations.  Is my assumption correct that we will have more than 4 yearly visits and that immunizations are expensive?

For moms of boys - we are planning to circumcise, so we need to have LO covered by my Cobra for the month of April to cover the surgery.  The monthly coverage will be 1200$.  Did anyone check their hospital bill after the surgery and might know generally how much circumcision costs?   If its less than 700$ I'm not sure its worth it to cover him, and instead pay out of pocket for that...  Thanks!

Re: BTDT moms - insurance question

  • I'm not a BTDT Mom but I work for my local health department and we offer immunizations on a sliding scale fee so you might contact your local HD and consider them as an option for LO's shots as well.

I'm on COBRA too, and I realize that the coverage is just the same as what your old insurance was, but for ours, they will cover the baby for the same amount of time that I'm in the hospital without us adding him to the plan. This includes routine circumcision. We're going to have DS covered by my plan in the hospital and then he will go on DH's plan immediately following. I'm not sure if that helps you or not, but maybe something to look into.

  • I did call about the circumcision since I heard that not all insurance plans considered routine or medically necessary anymore.  Ours doesn't consider it part of the basic newborn care.  So he can be covered under basic newborn care for no cost and we pay out of pocket for the surgery, or we can add him as a dependent and have the surgery covered.  700$ is the difference between adding and not adding him, so if the surgery is more than that, I want to get him added.  Thankfully, it will only be for one month before we switch to a non-Cobra plan!

Who does your circ the OB or the pedi? In our area it's the pedi. Can you call them and ask how much the procedure costs? Also, our hospital has a hotline where you can call and find out how much any in patient procedure costs. Maybe yours does too.

  • To answer your question about how many pediatrician visits- I think DS went to the pediatrician for well checks at least 8 times during the first 12 months. They saw him just after being discharged from the hospital, then every month for a while, then every three months. DS was born full term with no medical issues.

Sorry, I have no idea how much immunizations or circumcision costs.

  • In my childbirth class in NC they told us that circumcision cost about $250 if done at the pediatricians office.  I would recommend doing it at the pediatrician because you will not have all the extra costs that are charged by a hospital.
