What do you think? (baby weight)

Do you think the size of your baby has anything to do with how big you and your husband were when you were born?  I just ask my mom and MIL and I was 8 lbs 3 1/2 oz and DH was 8 lbs 15 oz.......

Re: What do you think? (baby weight)

  • Yes.  Every woman in my family has had big babies.  Most babies in the 9 lb range and even one over 10 lbs.  My DS was 9 lbs, 8 oz which was my exact weight when I was born as well.  I just had a growth u/s on monday and this baby is measuring in the 88th percentile.

IMO the birth weight of the parents doesn't have much to do with birth weight of baby. I was 7 lbs. 1 oz. and my husband was exactly 7 lbs. at birth and our DS weighed 9 lbs. 8 oz. when he was born. We're hoping for a smaller child this time to avoid the stitches.

  • We'll see (soon hopefully!).  I was 8.5 pounds, DH was around 6 pounds.  The BPP u/s and the midwives are all predicting she's going to be right around 7 pounds.  I definitely don't have a huge belly!

  • I've heard you can take the average of you and your husbands birth weights and that's an approximate for your baby's birth weight but who knows!

  • My dr. has been measuring my belly to see how big it is but he has said nothing about weight.  Will he start saying later or do I need to ask?

  • they say it takes more after YOUR size at birth, than your hubbies
  • I've read that their is a definite relation between how big the baby is when born and how big the parents were when they were born.  DH was 6 lbs 10 oz and I was 6 lbs 5 oz.  At our 32 week u/s the baby was weighing a little over 4 lbs and in the 65th percentile.  However, the measurement of a baby's weight via u/s is almost always off.

  • If you have a growth u/s (most are done around 32 wks), the u/s tech will tell you how much your baby is weighing and in what percentile.

  • i was 7 pounds 10 ounces, dh was 7 pounds 13 ounces and ds was 8 pounds 2 ounces.  lots of people think that the more weight you gain the bigger your baby is but i think thats bs too.  my mom gained like 20 pounds which each of her kids and my siblings were both bigger than me, 9 pounds even and 8 pounds 12 ounces.

this time around i'm hoping for a good sized baby again!  i would rather have a bigger baby because when they loose weight after birth i didn't worry as much.  plus an 8 pound baby is still very small in your arms :)

  • Sometimes, sometimes not. I was 8 lbs 6 oz and my hubby was 9 lbs and change. My DD was 7 lbs 11 oz - big for me (I'm 5 feet 2 inches and petite), but not bigger than average.

  • This is something I have been trying not to think about. My MIL said that DH was the biggest of her 4 boys at almost 9 pounds, and I was (and still am) the biggest baby on record in my family at 10 pounds 14 ounces! And yes, my mother had me vaginally. You can see why this theory scares the crap out of me! Everyone says my belly is huge for only having one baby in there, I don't think it is. Baby is measuring a week ahead right now too. I was also a long baby, almost 23 inches, so who knows. I am hoping for a long/tall baby instead a BIG baby, lol.
  • Hard to say. I was about 7 lbs and DH was 6-something, but our LO was already estimated around 5 lbs at our 32 week ultrasound!

  • I was 5 pounds 9 oz and my DH was 8 pounds...at 34 weeks on the growth u/s she was estimated at 5 pounds 1 oz....so I have no idea
Proud Marine Wife and soon to be mommy to a princess!
  • it depends mainly on the dad i would say. cuz my mom was petite and my dad was "broad" not fat just wide for his height. i was 6.5 lbs 3.5 weeks early. my husbands parents were bothe kinda petite and he was 6.5 lbs 1 day late. ours is currently measuring approx 6lbs 12 oz at 38 weeks. but u/s is a complete estimate. my bosses u/s put her son at 14 lbs, he was 9
  • It was right half the time for me. DH was over 8lbs (at 37 weeks), I was 9lbs 5oz and DS was 10lbs. My 2nd LO was under 8lbs though. I also measured on time/behind with my large baby and ahead with my small one.

My OB told me there's not a strong correlation between your birth weight/your partner's birth weight and your children's. The only thing you can say for sure is that if you've personally had a large baby before you're more likely to have a large baby with subsequent pregnancies.

  • Dh and I were not particularly large babies at birth (7-8ish pounds each I think).  But I make big babies...both boys were 9 pounds 5 oz at birth, and baby girl was measuring 9 and a half pounds already at 38 weeks.  I'm praying we don't break the 10 pound mark before she's induced this weekend!

Yup.   i was well under 7 lbs, DH was around 7 lbs, DD was 8lb 9oz.   I'm also hoping/praying/pleasing with the universal powers that I also will have a smaller baby this time and avoid stitches

  • I don't think it has much to do with it, but my first born's weight was just a tad over mine...so maybe? I was 4 lbs 6 oz, my husband was 9 lb 4 oz, and our son was 5 lbs 13 oz. Now...In my family, the babies are always 1 month- 2 weeks early...so who knows, there are a lot of factors I just don't understand yet (and probably never will :D). Lol.

  • Statistically, yes, there has been shown a weak correlation to your LO's size base on the size of you and DH at birth. There is not a statistical link to the average size of all your moms' babies (so say you were 7 lbs but sibs were all over 9, your baby still likely to be closer to your 7), nor to the average length of pregnancy/length of delivery of your moms.
  • We'll see. My Dr estimates this baby is no bigger than 7 lbs. I was 8.5 and DH was 9.5.

  • I'm not sure how true it is.  My mom had 3 big babies-I was over 9 lbs.  I gained 40 lbs w/ DD1 and she was born 5.6 lbs.  I'm almost at 40 lbs again and during the last growth u/s this baby is in the bottom 10% at 4.2 lbs. I think I just have small babies but no problem whatsoever gaining weight. ugh!

  • If the baby's birth weight is similar to their parents' birth weight this LO better take after me (7lbs 11oz) and not DH (10lbs 6oz).
    DD1: May 2011
    DD2: February 2014

  • Nope.  Dh was 6 something and I was 7lbs 3oz.  The biggest of my 4 siblings was 8lbs 3oz.  I was totally expecting 7lbs some oz.

Imagine my shock when I had my first 9 1/2 lber.  Which I followed up with ANOTHER 9 1/2 lber.  I'm REALLY hoping that what they say about subsequent babies being bigger is not true for me.  Oh, and no history of GD here.. they even tested the babies and I after birth to make sure.

That is SO funny. My DH was the same exact size as you (10lbs 14oz) and he was 23 inches long. He is now 6'8". I was 8lbs 21 inches (now only 5'4"). I'm measuring 4 weeks ahead, but my MW said I won't need a growth ultrasound unless she thinks the baby is over 10lbs...which I think *could* happen. I hope both of us have average sized babies for our sake! : )

  • I asked my doctor this and she said that generally no.  We have no way of knowing what kind of pregnancy there was and what kind of prenatal care. I was 7 14 and DH was 6lbs 7oz.

This baby is already measuring 7lbs at 37 weeks.

Oh wow, that's too funny! I'm 5'4" too, and DH is 6' even. His dad was like 6'5" I think. My OB hasn't guessed at the weight yet, but I plan to ask at my appt on Tues. They said that if lo keeps measuring ahead, with the tape measure, they will do a growth scan otherwise they are not worried about it. Hoping for average sized babies for both of us as well. Good luck :)

I was about 7lb 7oz.  DH was a premie so he was just under 3lbs.

  • I'm not sure but I really don't think the baby's weight has much to do with how big you get. My cousin had cute little basketball pregnancies and both of her kids were around 10 pounds. I gained 60 pounds and my son was less than 7 pounds at birth.
  • My family has a history of big babies- my petite little Nana was 11lbs at birth and my mom and her 7 siblings were all over 9lbs.  That being said I was less than 6lb.  BUT DH and his sister were both in the 9lb range.  Needless to say, I'm a little scared of how big this LO could be!

  • Not necessarily. ?I was 8 something and DH was 10 lbs 9 oz (YIKES!). ?DS was 7lbs 13 oz.
