2nd Trimester

Due Date/ Hubby away

Hello Ladies, here is a question for you.

So my due date is September 21. My Hubby was offered a course, 3 hrs away, for the dates of September 6-9th. We are not sure if he should take it and run the risk of missing the birth.

Any opinions on what we should do?

Re: Due Date/ Hubby away

  • It's a full two weeks prior to your due date.  Have him sign up for it and ask about a refund policy if you deliver before that and he can't make it.  Your doctor will be doing frequent visits with you at that point and will be able to give you a better sense of how close you are at that point anyway.

3 hours away if you call him right when contractions start is still pretty early.  You probably wouldn't be ready to go to the hospital for several more hours by the time he got back most likely.

  • If this is your first then odds are you have nothing to worry about. The baby most likely will not come before the 21st.

  • Does he have to pay for the course?  Would he get some sort of refund if he had to leave early?  I don't think 3 hours is too far away, particularly that far out from your due date (since most first-time moms go late), but I'd be concerned about how much of an inconvenience it may be if he has to cancel.

  • Well his work will be paying for the course. I am sure they would have a refund policy in a situation like this.

That is a good idea, call as soon as the contractions start. This is our first baby, so I don't know what to expect, accept for what I see on tv. ie- water breaks, 1/2 hr later baby is there :)

Wish that was how it happened, sex on tv looks better too!

You are going to be seriously disappointed if you think labor is going to be this quick. Or on time. Or early. Yes, it can happen, but I wouldn't count on it. He should take the course.

  • My first baby I went 2 wks early and was in labor for.a few hours. It can happen
  • I wouldn't have him go.

I understand the first time pregnancies usually run late, but that is not the case for everyone and unfortunately in this situation, you can not predict the future. I'm not even letting my DH go out of state (flyt time would be 1.5 hours) a month before the pregnancy just in case anything happens. A friend of mine went into labor with her first one month prior and the baby came out in less than 30 min. Granted, it's not like that for everyone, but it still happens! Her hubby almost missed it and he was just at work!

I would just ask myself (and my husband) if it's worth the chance of missing the birth. If not, then can they reschedule?

Ha, love it.  to skiezik: I wouldn't have a problem with my husband taking the course.  3 hours is not that far away.  You do not want to live the last couple weeks in fear that you are going into labor, you will drive yourself crazy!

  • Thanks for all the advice.

  • My H was scheduled to be 2 hours away on my due date. I asked my OB if he should cancel his work and the doc said no b/c a) I probably won't go in labor on my due date and b) 2 hours would be plenty of time for him to get back.

That was on my actual due date, too, and not a few weeks prior.  Just have a plan in place just in case and you should be good.
