Grocery Staples

What items are [almost] always on your weekly list (or do you buy different items every time you go)?

Re: Grocery Staples

  • 99% of the time I always need Milk (whole and 1%), bread, lunchmeat, cheese, cereal, bananas, apples, lettuce, tomato, sweet potatoes, berries, spinach, chicken breasts, yogurt, eggs, egg beaters, unsalted butter, sour cream, goldfish, raisins, granola bars, frozen veg, beer, wine.

  • Milk, bread, and produce are always on my list.  Sometimes meat it just depends on what we are making for the week and if we already have some frozen.  Now that the boys are drinking milk we go through 3 gallons in a week.  I can only imagine what it is going to be like as they get bigger.  Regardless it's cheaper than formula so I'll take it!

  • imagesistrkate:

    spaghetti sauce

Yes, this too! We have implemented a weekly spaghetti dinner into our rotation. I try to stock up on both pasta and sauce when they are on sale, but it's definitely a weekly "need" in our house, too.

ETA: I need to find a homemade recipe that I/we love and start making huge batches.

  • Bananas

    Berries

    Potatoes

    Peppers

    Containers of salad

    • pickles (DH is ridonk about his stupid pickles)

We are very passionate about pickles in our house too.

bread (usually whole grain & 1 speciality from either the bakery or something like dark rye)

romaine lettuce, carrots, celery, tomatoes & any veggies on sale

gerber yogurt for DS & jars of baby food custard (lol dont ask its super high calorie)

half gallon of whole milk, half gallon of skim (DS isnt on milk yet, still formula so we just need it to mix his carnation instant breakfast)

    carnation instant breakfast & formula

probably every other week I buy a frozen pizza to have on hand for nights I dont feel like cooking

    This is my favorite part.

  • milk

cheese - string and cojack. shredded if we are making pizza

I have also gotten addicted to michelina's lean gourmet pizza snacks

    grapes, bananas, apples

chicken (breasts, thighs), pork (chops and boneless ribs), beef (steak and ground beef)

    bread

    cereal

snacks for the kids - fruit snacks, peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks, applesauce, did I mention fruit snacks?

frozen veggies (usually the steamer bags) fresh mushrooms, salad, zuchinni and squash, sweet potatoes, onions

frozen spinach ravioli - aldi carries them and DD LOVES them.

The rest depends on what is on the menu. okay who's kidding, it depends on what looks and sounds good while we are shopping.

  • imagesistrkate:

    bananas

    watermelon

    spaghetti sauce

    cheese

I usually buy more than this, I just can't think of it all right now.  I should probably add yogurt and bagels to the list, as well as juice for the kids.

I spend easily $150 week at the grocery store, so I know my list is longer than that.  And my cart is less and less full for the same amount of money.

Giada's marinara recipe is our favorite. It is easy, makes a ton, and has carrots and celery in it so some sneaky extra veg. Food network website has the recipe.

Oh, yes. I forgot about crumbly salad cheese. My latest salad obsession includes apples and gorgonzola with a cider vinaigrette. I could eat it every.single.day.

Exactly this, except our dinners don't vary as much as I'd like.

Sometimes we share just a little too much around here.  Enough that other people keep their lips zipped about things they do and things they eat.  I'm in that club too.  Wink

  • Milk (skim and almond)

    Multi-grain bread

Fruit (always apples and bananas and then I usually pick 2 extras per week)

    Natural Peanut Butter

Jelly (smuckers Special Recipie.. the only kind I like and I can only find at Costco)

    Eggs

That is pretty much our weekly must haves. I pick up the rest according to the needs that week. I also stockpile certain items (canned tomatoes, beans, pasta, tuna etc) so I always have those on hand.

  • Our list is pretty routine because I'm a terrible cook.

We get most of our veggies/fruit from Green BEAN, but sometimes I have to fill some holes, especially with fruit.  Each week we have strawberries, blueberries, bananas, apples, grapes and canteloupe from one source or another.

Bread - maybe every other week

Taco mix/shells for weekly taco night

    Ground turkey

Meat - usually what is on sale (chuck roast, steak, flank steak, stir fry beef, etc)

Pork chops if they're on sale

Frozen green beans and peas (Allie's favorite)

    Yougurt

    Milk

Cheese (shredded, cottage, string and block)

Chips for DH's lunch / Corn chips for taco night

    Ice Cream for DH

Usually chicken/beef broth and cream soups if needed.

    Lunch meat for DH's lunch

    Crackers of some sort

Whatever snack DH wants for his lunch that week (Nutter butter, cookies, etc)
