November 2011 Moms

Puppies

My husband and I brought home a puppy the NIGHT that we got pregnant (at least I'm pretty sure it was the night).

We knew we were gonna start trying, but we didn't know what to expect.

Most of the time I love my puppy, but having a puppy in my first trimester is SO exhausting.  When I get home from work I'm ready to veg-- my puppy thinks it's playtime. Ugh.

Re: Puppies

  • I am thoroughly convinced that our puppy is the reason I am pregnant.  We got her February 6th and bam, next month I am pregnant after TTC for over a year.  The things I thought were so cute before are annoying and exhausting to me now.  Hopefully I can show her some love after this first tri wraps up!

  • Mine just turned a year this month and she still exhaustes me. Luckily.... I have two older dogs that she loves to antaginize (SP?) And the older one do pretty good at wearing her out! Good luck. It gets better!

  • I feel so bad because I do love her to pieces, but she requires so much of me.

I get home from work at about 4:30 and my husband gets home at about 6:15.  Guess who gets crazy puppy party time? She's usually passed out for the hubs, but wild for me.

I try to put up with it since she's alone most of the day but sometimes it's exhausting and I want to scream.

It will probably get easier once I enter the second trimester and get my energy back. Hehe. Stick out tongue

  • I know exactly how you feel!  We have a 9 month old golden retriever.  From the time we get home from work until the time we go to bed, one of us be on "Geno duty" (usually DH now that I pass out on the couch after dinner!).  He needs 100% attention and playtime or he acts up (we can't blame him - he's by himself for 10 hours a day!).  Even 45 minute walks don't take away from his energy!  I hope that he is more calm by the time November rolls around!

  • Our rottie mix turns 1 tomorrow.  He's 90 pounds and will probably grow a little more and sometimes he's completely unaware of his size.  He still tries to sit on my lap, and I feel like such a tyrant screaming at him to get down, but I know it's necessary to set those boundaries now.  He's usually crazy right when I get home from work for around 2 hours, then gets nuts again when DH comes home.

I know the vet hates it, but I don't know what I'd do without rawhide to keep him busy and not chewing on shoes or wires.  I should buy stock in it.

try bully sticks instead of raw hides- no risk of shards coming off and irritating the stomach.  if your dog is a resource hoarder, be careful though b/c mine is and once you give a bully stick to her, there's no getting it back. here's a link: https://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4290906.  they're pricey but they last a long time if you get the large braided ones.

or, try a kong and fill it with peanut butter or shredded cheese or something https://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3206970&lmdn=Dog+Toys

my dog gets these when i need her to be good while i can't watch her.  they will keep her occupied for a while
