Babies: 6 - 9 Months

anyone else have a LO at the 3rd %ile in weight?

My LO is going on 8 months and has gone down from the 10th to the 3rd percentile in weight. Our pediatrician did not seem very concerned about it, and said it was because he's simply burning more calories, so we need to introduce a third solids meal per day, which I plan to do. But, I can't help but feel as if I'm somehow doing something wrong. I breastfeed and I've been sitting around obsessing that I'm somehow not adequately meeting his needs (like maybe the composition of my milk is not adequate). Somebody talk me down off the roof.

  • My cousin went through this with her son. She started feeding him more solids, especially table foods, and he started packing on the pounds. He's still about the same size as Lucas, who is 3.5 months younger- some babies are just tiny, and thats ok.

  • I would clap and jump up and down if LO could make it to the  3rd percentile. She's been way, way below that charts forever. I've come to realize that the chart means nothing!

  • At my LO 6th month appt she was in the 3rd. Doc did not seem concerned because she grew 3 inches in length since her 4 month check-up. He said it was up to me but he suggested adding more calories to her diet by mixing her brastmilk bottles half and half with Iron fortified Formula. I tried it and she seems more contented. She still gets her breastmilk but just with a litle more to it.
  • My niece has been in the 3rd % often.  She's 3, eats like a horse and her mother is a Dr.  She just burns off a lot of calories.  You're not doing anything wrong, you just have to make sure you're offering food all day long.

The Dr. won't get worried unless your child stops growing all together or drops from the 95th to the 3rd suddenly.

I wouldn't worry about it, sounds like you've got it under control.

  • DD is in the 3rd percentile for weight.  At her 9 month appt, she weighed 15 lbs 1/2 oz.  But she's in the 60th for length (27 3/4").  The pedi is not concerned - he called her small but mighty!  Smile  I'd say if your doc is not concerned, I wouldn't worry.

  • Ditto pp's about not worrying.  DS has consistently been in 3rd % since 2months. Doc scheduled a weight check @ 3 months & he'd gain 1 whole pound LOL.  After she saw he was growing consistently, althought maybe not in big amounts, then he was fine.

@ his appt a few wks ago, she just rec'd upping solids to twice a day so he could get more calories from there.

  • The most important thing is watching your baby's cues. Is he still fussy and hungry after feedings? That happened to me around 3 months. I had to introduce formula to keep up with him (he has always been in the 90% for height and weight). I felt like a failure at first but then realized I was a great mom for putting his needs first. No mom is perfect. All that matters is you try your best!
  • Just keep on trucking and feed him a 3rd meal. Keep on nursing- if the doctor was worried your milk was insufficient he'd tell you! You're doing great!

  • DD has been around 3 % on the charts since 4 months.  Her previous appointment I think she was at 10 %.  Our pediatrician isn't worried.  He did have us start solids after her 4 month appointment and suggested going up to 3 meals a day at her 6 month.  We have done that.  She is probably just going to be small.  Both my husband and I we small as babies and are about average or a bit smaller now.
