Reflux getting worse, and now has colic

My preemie twins were born at 35 weeks, 1 day and will be 9 weeks tomorrow!  My water broke, but due to severe pre-e and HELPS I had an emergency C-section.  I have been lurking around here since then and now need to hear some of you experiences.

 My little girl came home right away, but had no idea how to suck and swallow.  She cought on to that and at some point began to spit up a lot and it was determined she had reflux.  Since she was so uncomfertable while she was spitting up, and was spewing frequently we decided to put her on medecine (zantac), even though she was gaining weight.  This was right after their 4 week well visit.

She had gotten better, it seemed.  She almost never spews now!  Then since Thursday she started spitting up her entire bottle almost every other time, and looking to eat a lot less often.  Then during her spitting up episodes where usually she just looks like she is in pain, she stops breathing and turns bright red. 

The not breathing is usually right before her next feeding.  When she spits up a lot it's normally right after a feed, but often the episodes of being uncomfertable are about an hour after her feeding.

For over a week now she has begun showing signs of colic, and the Dr believes thats what it is.  One day she was up for 11 hours straight!  It doesn't help that any rocking makes her spit up.

She is now 8 pounds and was eating 4 OZ every three hours during the day, and 5 hours at night.  I gave her a 2.5 OZ bottle with rice last night and she had a horrible spitting up episode so I don't think it's the amount.

I guess my question is has anyone had any experince like this?  Should reflux seem so painful?  Is it normal to improve only to get worse again?

I am worried it is something else.

    Sorry to hear about DC's troubles.  Both my twins had reflux.  DD's was silent.  Eat, burp, scream/cry and refuse to eat.  DS was the spit up/vomit king.  They had to be on BOTH zantac and prevacid.  Plus we would have to increase the amount of zantac as they gained weight.  We also used Nutramigen and thickened their formula w/cereal.  DD was on meds until 13.5 mo and DS was on meds until 15.5 mo.  Good luck and I hope you both get some relief soon!

    Zantac didn't work for us so we switched to Prevacid. After a few months of DD supposedly having "colic" along with the reflux, we decided to see if she had a dairy allergy. I was EBFing and cut out all dairy, soy, and egg and after a few weeks she started sleeping better and was not throwing up all over all the time. Her fussiness went away for the most part. I would look into something else bothering her if I were you. I don't really believe in colic...

    One of my boys had reflux you could see him gagging and trying to swallow it looked painful. They switched him to similiac for spit up it's got the rice starch in it. It's made a big difference. One of my friend's son went home and about after a week he started projective vomitting all his feedings. They went to the pedi they said reflux started him on zantac wish helped for a little bit. He started vomitting again they went in for weight check and he had lost weight, so they were sent to the ER for full workup. In the long run he had pyloric stentosis. He  cried alot and never slept. They were also questioning the milk allergy. Hope your little one gets better

    Thanks everyone.

    They are already on  Similac Alimentum because they can't break down the protein in diary. 

     My sister had pyloric stentosis.  The ER Dr. said it def is not, but then when I was on the phone with the pedi I heard him say if it was it would be the very start.

    We are going to a GI Dr. on Monday.  I hope there is more he can do for her.  She is gaining weight, but just seems so uncomfertable.  I feel awful for her!

    I can't seem to get her to eat less either.  If I give her 2OZ she will scream for an hour if I don't get another 2 in her!

    I don't have much knowledge on reflux meds, my middle son did fine with just Zantac, but I couldn't help but respond because you said they are on Alimentum because they have problems with milk/soy proteins, So it?s possible that your LOs reflux-y and colic-y symptoms haven?t improved on Alimentum because it still contains milk protein chains. While some babies do great on these formulas others need an elemental formula, like Neocate that don?t contain any milk protein chains. Instead they are made up of individual amino acids (the building blocks of protein) which makes them 100% hypoallergenic and the easiest formula for babies with allergies to digest. I?d def check in with your doc and see what they think.   Just a tought! HTH !
