We are planning to attempt to use the simple signs of the things this LO might want most often. I have been looking for a good resource on the web, but everything I keep finding wants me to sign up and buy stuff. I just want to get ahead start on teaching myself and DH the signs. I also am not sure at what age you would start trying to teach them. Any advice?
Re: Baby Sign Language
I did it with a little girl when I was a nanny but I don't remember how old she was. I think around 9-10 months. I plan to check out my library for a few books when the time comes.

I was/am inspired to become a Deaf interpreter and I LOVE sign language. Been signing and involved with the Deaf community for the last 15 years. Here are some good websites for you to learn.

You can start anytime. There's no harm in starting at say 6 months but it might be awhile before your baby can sign back. We started more at 9 months. Both kids now tons of signs now... but I'm hearing impaired and my son has a mild loss so we've worked on it more than most.

I started my DS at about 6 months... but he didn't start signing until between 10-12 months, and even then, they still needed quite a bit of work. lol. He uses about 30-something words now in sign (which he can now also speak.) Over the last few months he's finally been saying words that I have no signs to teach him to go with it. (that I know, of course.)
I have a mild (but accelerating) hearing loss myself, so would really like to learn ASL fluently, so I can teach both of my kids. I just can't afford/don't have the time for classes as of lately, with the toddler, pregnancy, and an already-full college courseload. Bleh!
we did it just for fun, but i agree with pp Baby Signing Times is THE BEST...
i started it maybe a little before 6mos, i didn't practice it with her as often as i should have, but she loved the videos and learned quite a bit by herself.
also, check your local community college. in san diego, the community college offered a free baby sign language class...
I went to a book store and bought a baby sign language book. There were a few different books to pick from and they each had a section telling you when/how to start teaching the baby the signs and a section with illustrations of all the signs.
If I remember right, I think you can start signing to the baby around 7 months, but the baby might not start signing back until 8 or 9 months.
One of the creators of Baby Signs, Susan Goodwyn, was a college professor of mine. She and her partner are some of the leading researchers in baby sign language. She's brilliant! I always get excited when I see people promote her work and the movement, even though I never did it with my kids (I should, it's fascinating).
