help me decide: gas or electric for my new range?

We're down to one eye working on our stove. I want gas, DH wants electric. It does not have a gas line to it right now, but the gas line goes right under the kitchen and wouldn't be super hard to get it hooked up. I hear that baking in a gas oven is a PITA, though, is that true?

  • Gas. I can't stand electric for cooking. If you get a convection oven, things brown evenly and it reduces cooking time.

  • Gas!  I've never had problems baking in my gas oven.  I'd never heard that complaint before either??
  • I have had a gas oven before and never had any problems with it, it was a commercial one though, a hobart I think.  I adore my gas range though, and hate electric.  I would go gas just for that.
  • I hated having an electric stove and I don't think the gas oven is a problem as long as you allow it to preheat properly.

  • Gas. I loathe electric stoves.

  • Yes, I am not a fan of gas for ovens. I know it is pricey but If I had to choose a range it would be gas stove with electric oven. Some things are great in a gas oven, baking is better in electric. But I would always choose gas stove over electric no matter what.

  • I love my gas cooktop and my double convection ovens:)
  • Definitely gas!  My parents have an electric convection oven, I have a gas.  My dad and I make the same exact cheesecake recipe and mine always comes out creamier.

In a perfect world, I would have a gas cooktop and an electric convection oven. I'd want a hybrid.

Do they sell hybrids that are all in one?  In my CA house, I have a gas cooktop and electric ovens (one convection), but they are totally separate. But it is the best of both worlds.  In the house we're currently in, I have one unit, and it's all gas.  I haven't had great results with the oven, but I still prefer to have the gas on the cooktop.  I think a lot of gas ovens have a problem with too much humidity and some can't broil, but some brands have found ways to handle those problems, so make sure to research.

  • I won't have the luxury of a hybrid or getting separate ones :)  I've budgeted $600 tops for this. I'd prefer to spend less.

I'd still pick gas. You'll love it for cooking and I'm sure you'll get used to the oven.
  • In that case, I think I would still choose gas.   GL!
  • Gas for sure. Most people prefer gas so it would be a good investment into your home anyway.
  • Gas. As long as you let the oven preheat well and use an oven thermometer, its fine for baking if you aren't doing anything really complicated.

  • I make fancy desserts from time to time, but on a daily basis, the stovetop is used more than the oven. Thanks for being on my side :)  Now I have to convince DH...or just go buy it without telling him!

If this is your budget for gas line and stove I would stick with electric (ceramic top).  Have you looked into the price of having the gas line run?  Also I suggest looking at Lowe's early in the mornings, DH got a $900 stove for $300 because the plastic handle on the drawer was broken (which we replace for $30.)

  • I will get a gas for my next one.

  • Definitely gas.  I hate cooking on an electric range, and they look cheap to me.  We're looking to buy a new house in the near future, and for us an electric range is a huge drawback in a house.

  • Hands down, no doubt about it, by far GAS!
