Is this a little weird

So hubby and I found out on Friday that we are having a little boy - very exciting. We have the name picked out - Massimo, Max for short. So I don't call my belly Massimo I usually say baby or him/he. A girl at work refers to him as Max as in "How's Max doing today?" the first time she did it I couldn't figure out who she was talking about! I find it a little odd that she refers to my belly by the name we have actually chosen - is it weird or is it me?

  • All of my friends and relatives do now too, I even do sometimes. I mean technically just because he's still an inside baby he's not any less Max/Massimo then he will be when he's an outside baby eh? lol I don't know

  • It's not really surprising, but I do think it's weird. That's one of the reasons I'm not telling anyone the name we choose until birth. Just keep saying back, "The baby is fine" etc and maybe she'll get a clue.

  • I don't think it's weird at all, if you've made your name choice known to your co-workers.  I mean, it's not like she's asking how your belly is doing today.  She's asking how the baby is doing.  I refer to ours as A and B, because we haven't chosen any names yet.  It bugs DH and he said as soon as we can get names chosen, we'll call them by their names.

Yes, I do think its weird. MIL did that when I was pregnant with DD and it made me completely change the name. She wore it out before she was even born.

My brother LOVES the name Massimo. He said that will be his sons name.

Edit: I wrote the OPPOSITE of what I wanted to say. pregnancy brain.

  • With our first, we had a boy name and girl name going into the anatomy scan. Coming out of the scan, as soon as we announced boy, my belly was always Jax. This one will be different because we can't agree on names, but it is not weird if you already have a name picked out for the baby and people know the name/gender. In your belly, Max is in there. Your belly is Max.  He is the reason your belly is the way it is. After Jax was born and people would ask where my belly went(jokingly of course), we always pointed to Jax and say it is right here.

  • We named our son Ian this week, and we refer to him and talk about him as "Ian". I don't think it's strange. I don't see why what you chose to call "it" on the inside should be different than what you call it on the outside once you've chosen a name (and go public with it). But if it makes you uncomfortable, stop telling people his name and refer to him as how you would like others to refer to him.

  • I personally find it weird, and it's one of the reasons we aren't telling people our name ahead of time.  I don't mind it once in awhile, or referring to future baby - "Oh, little Max will love that stuffed animal!" kind of thing - but consistently referring to the fetus growing in my belly as a child's name is kind of weird to me.  She will officially get named when she becomes an outside baby.

My cousin sent out Christmas cards this year and signed them with her unborn daughter's name, and it just seemed strange.  It doesn't bother me at all if other people do it with their unborn children, but I'm personally not comfortable with it for my baby, at least on a regular basis.

  • Thanks all - I'm still weirded out by it. Hopefully as this pregnancy progress it will become more natural for me.
