2nd Trimester

Clear Liquid from nipples

Has anyone else had clear liquid coming from their nipples?  I noticed it tonight for the first time, and from what I have found, colostrum is normal in the third trimester, but it sounds like that is yellowish as well instead of clear.   I will call my Dr. in the morning, but thought I would check here until then.  Thanks

Re: Clear Liquid from nipples

  • I wouldn't bother calling the doc. It's normal to get nipple leakage, and it can happen in the 2nd tri too. But to each their own.

  • Yeah, that's colostrum and it's normal that it's yellowish.

  • It's normal, and the farther along you get it will change to a creamy tint and will stay like that until after your milk comes in if you are going to bf.

  • My breasts started leaking clear liquid at 18 weeks when pressure was applied. By 28 weeks, I had to wear breast pads full-time.

  • That's colostrum or pre-milk. After you give birth, you'll make a new supply of it and it gives your newborn a huge boost of immune protection and feeds them (although it's a few ounces it's more than enough!) until your milk comes in 4-6 days post-birth.

  • I started leaking pretty early too.  I think it was 15 or 16 weeks when I first noticed it.  I've been wearing pads full time for about a month now (26 weeks).  I hope it just means I'll have a great milk supply when the baby comes.

  • cwyland, my OB was sure I'd have a great supply when I had DS. Unfortunately, I don't think early leaking has little to do with actual supply. I was unable to breastfeed for a variety of reasons, but the primary reason I quit was because my milk never came in.

  • It's just colostrum. I've been leaking it since 11 weeks. My nurse said it was perfectly normal and to not really stimulate the nipples too much.

  • VERY normal. it will turn to the yellowish color by the time the baby's born, or shortly thereafter! No worries :)
