Does anyone use Mint.com?? Holy overspending!

I just signed up for Mint.com, because DH and I are in desperate need of a serious budget overhaul. I knew that we were overspending in way too many categories, but holy crap....it just showed me that we spent over $120 on FAST FOOD this month alone. Disgusting.

Not only will tracking our spending help our bank accounts, but it turns out it'll help our health, too!

  • I use mint.com too and I love it. It also sends you emails when you've gone over your budget for something and you can plan goals and things like that. Its a really great tool.

  • Never heard of it but I will check it out and print out worksheets if I have to! I know dh says I worry too mix so I think this will ease my mind.. or make it worse till its better!
  • Cool! MH and I were just talking about how much we spend on fast food. It'd be interesting to put an actual number to it. On the other hand....maybe I don't want to know, ekk!

Haha, I know it WOULD be a good idea to use Mint, but I don't really want to get the business about the percentage that goes towards online shopping just yet ;)

  • Surfing on my phone.. they have an android app! Oh dear let's see how this goes..
  • I love Mint. The only problem I have is that SO and I keep different checking accounts and then have a joint that we put money into for household bills (rent, utilities, cable). Mint doesn't do a good job of keeping up w/those transfers :( It counts it as income when it isn't...
  • Holy crap. Signed into our USAA account to see if they offered something like this......they do. I'm embarrased about how much we have spent on dining out this month :(
  • I'm really liking the site so far -- we're budget-stupid, so we needed something to slap us in the face and say, "MORONS, you're spending $XXXX at Target every month! Watch it!"

Though I do need to tweak a few things. It has a pre-set $70 monthly grocery budget? WTF? Are they expecting me to turn into one of those crazy coupon ladies on the new TLC show?

Hmmm. That is interesting because our transfers never count as income on Mint. However, we have all our accounts listed, even our individual ones.  So when I transfer the transaction just gets labeled as "transfer" for the category and doesn't affect our income.  When you change the label make sure you save it to have a rule to always label the transaction as a transfer.  If you already have done that, then I don't know what we're doing differently.

OP we love Mint.  It really helped a lot of unnecessary spending to be cut right away.

SO's accounts aren't on it so I just need to adjust my thinking about it. Overall I have a couple of strange things that move through the accounts that make things look strange. Nothing shady, just not usual.

I'm thinking about using Dave Ramsey's courses because I really have to get my student loans cut down. ouch!!

I've been using mint for a while. I really like it because it makes tracking money so easy. You can always change categories if it gets it wrong. I have it on my phone as well.

I don't know how we do it, but we spent $500+ on groceries this month...it is just two of us. It does include toiletries.

  • We have been TERRIBLE in the last month.  I just don't feel like cooking, and that usually means not eating at home.

  • Yes, we've been using it for almost two years. It's great! Almost all of our accounts are on there, and I'm diligent about categorizing our transactions. It's great accountability for both of us, and it's easy to see which bills have and haven't been paid yet. I love that you can roll over a monthly budget, which is great for our individual fun money categories. I agree that it can be brutal to find out how much you are actually spending in certain areas!

You can go in and change the name/category of a charge if mint messes it up. For instances I always buy metro cards at the Shaw metro station.. mint think's Shaw's is a grocery store so I have to go in and change the category :)

  • DH signed us up, but I keep the budget/manage finances and have never used it. I keep my own spreadsheet with our budget, income, expenditures, and savings. After reading everyone's posts about how great it is I might have to change my system!

  • I've tried to use it several times, since it has such high reviews, but since we primarily use our CapitalOne card to earn points (and pay it off in full each month), for some reason, Mint cannot figure out what our transactions on the credit card are.  The bank account works just find, but the majority of our purchases do not.  Frustrating.

ETA:  Our student loan accounts also have issues connecting, which amount to 25% of our monthly payments, so it's difficult to keep good records using it.
