Closed anterior fontanel

We went to DD's 4 month appointment today and everything was fine except her anterior fontanel is completely closed. Her doc said this shouldn't happen until 2-4 years because her brain needs room to grow. Her doc made her an appointment with a neurosurgeon for a catscan in a few weeks. I keep telling myself its probably fine but I've never been this scared in my life. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Re: Closed anterior fontanel

  • I've been wondering if DS has this. He has hard, elevated ridges on his head where the bones come together, so it looks like it's closing/closed. I don't know anything about it, but T&P for your DD that everything turns out alright.

  • A girl on the October board, Tricia something has this going on with her DS. And someone responded that her husband had that done as well. I'll try and find her full SN
  • Tricia879 is her SN.... she has this going on with her son also
  • I dont, but I will keep your DD in my thoughts. Keep us posted ok?
  • My friend's little boy's fontanels closed early, he was diagnosised with craniosynostosis.  He had surgery to open the fusion- most kids only have to have one surgery, he had to have 2 but he is a happy and healthy 8 year old.
  • I am so sorry you are having to worry : ( I'm glad your pedi is being proactive about it. That is a good sign : )

Same thing happened with my DS1. We went for his 4 month appointment and his fontanel was closed. I ended up switching pedi's because he made me feel as if I was worrying for no reason. I was begining to worry because he was starting to get a mild ridge on his forehead.

When I found a new pedi (that I love), she referred us to the top neurosurgeon in our area. He was great too, and ordered a CT scan. We had a few appointments with him before and after the CT scan. The CT scan showed everything to be ok. So that was a big relief.

We were told that if there had been an issue, they had a surgical procedure to remove a small peice of the skull bone to allow for growth and release any pressure on his brain. Thankfully he ended up not needing any intervention at all.

He is now a happy, healthy 4 year old. Good luck with everything. Lots of thoughts and prayers coming your way. PM me if you need to talk.

This was exactly the case with a friend's dd.  She's happy & healthy after 2 surgeries.

  • Thank you all. O also has a ridge but its in the back of he head and at least to me her head appears perfectly shaped. Its going to be a long wait fo that appointment. I'll update when I know something more.
