heartbeat-correlation to old wives tale

Hi all! I got to hear/see my babies heartbeat today at 10 weeks 5 days and it was a healthy 168 bpm! I have heard high heartbeat=girl according to the old wives tale, but all my other "old wives tale" signs are leading to boy. what is everyone elses experience with the heartbeat, did the majority of you find this true?

Re: heartbeat-correlation to old wives tale

  • My DD was always in the 170's and she is a girl. This one I don't find out until Tuesday, but has always been in the 150s

  • It was for me, but based on what other people have said it's not true at all.

totally untrue.  DD's heartbeat was solid high 150's.  this little one (which is also a girl) was hitting around 138 at our last appt.  the nurse said that low heart beats could mean a boy, but we found out last week it's a girl.  so i wouldn't assume anything based on heart rates.

  • With my DS his heartbeat was consistently 165-178 throughout my entire pregnancy. The majority of OWT pointed towards girl for him... We were Team Green.

  • My baby's HR has been in the 160's every appointment, and he is a little boy... so the old wive's tale didn't hold true for us.

  • I'm having a girl and her heartbeat is usually around 150bpm. At 11 weeks when I first heard her HB it was 166bpm.

  • I was always told high hb = boy, which held true for DS who always had a hb in the 170-180s

  • Our little boy consistently has a HB around 160.

  • For me it was, the lowest hb recorded for our LO was 151.  However my SIL's LO has always had a high hb too tho and she is having a boy.

  • OWT

Heart rate changes all the time depending on how active the baby is.  A penis doesn't make it any different than a vagina.

  • Nope! Our little guys heartbeat started at 155, then went up on subsequent visits and is back in the 150s range.

I heard somewhere (don't remember if it was our doctor or my husband's aunt who is a nurse) but the majority of babies start with a higher heartbeat. It's only after 20 weeks when the heartbeat either begins to drop back down or stabilizes. Apparently this is when the old wives tale comes more into play.

  • With my LO his heartbeat was consistently 170-178 in the beginning.  We found out last week, we're having a boy.  I had to have another doppler reading and ultra sound this week too, and now he's in the mid 140's. We thought girl all along, but last week we clearly saw Team Blue.  =0)

  • My LO's heartbeat has always been above 140.  I think it was 145 at 13wks, 150-something at 18wks and 168 the day we found out our LO is a He.  So no, absolutely untrue.  Remember that your baby's heart is a lot smaller than ours and so needs to pump faster to get the blood through the body properly.
  • With most of my mom's kids (8), the girls were high and boys were low, but not always! My little boy had a heart rate of 168 at 16 weeks, then 156 at 19 weeks. My doctor said the heart rate can fluctuate throughout the pregnancy.

  • It was true for me. In fact is was the only OWT that turned out the be true.

  • My DD was always in the 170's and this LO has been 150 every time and he's a boy. They say below 140 is a boy but I honestly don't know anyone IRL who has had a boy and the heartrate has been below 140.

  • My ds and dd had exactly the same heartbeat at the big u/s-it was around 152, I think. we were team green both those times. This one was in the 140's last checked and we will find out the sex next week. My sil said when she was in labor with her dd, the nurses kept saying it had to be a boy because of it's heartbeat(lower) they were wrong, I was just surprised nurses thought things about the heartrate too..

  • OP, didn't you ask a similar question on second tri last week? I remember because at the time I also thought you were the one posting constantly about miscarrying on First tri.

EDIT: And now I see you are posting the exact same questions on first and second tri, including this post and your post about names.

HB is 140-150 consistantly.  Having a girl.

  • Mine did not hold true to this myth.  Even when I was getting my NST's the tech asked me if we knew what we were having.  I told her yes a girl and she said based on the readings she was getting she would have thought a boy.  And we did have a girl.

  • It's normal for it to be high at the very beginning - I think mine was 178 at first. Then it was 155. Last check it was 137. We are team green...I wouldn't place much stock in this OWT but it's always fun to play with these and see if they were true (which they tend to be...about 50% of the time.)

  • Both my girls were always in the high 160's, and this one started out that way.  But at my u/s at 19 weeks it was 146 while moving and I'm having a boy.
