Caffeine & BFing

How much are you consuming? Still no more than 200 mg/day? I want Pepsi ALL THE TIME. I mean, I'm sure it's because I get no sleep now. Just wondering how much everyone else is consuming.

Re: Caffeine & BFing

  • I was seriously JUST about to write a post about the exact same thing. I want coke all the time ... how else do you handle sleep deprivation but with caffeine?!?!

I have been having either one or two cans of coke a day. Today, I didn't have one until 7:30pm and I got a headache.

I read in some magazine that an apple should give you as much energy as a can of caffinated soda. I eat apples but I don't notice the same energy burst ...

  • I read on kellymom today that up to 5 cups of coffee is ok. Unless I was really tired when I read it. I feel like I need to go double check now.

Ok, here is the page where I saw the 5 cups of coffee a day blurb from. What it actually says (please excuse my mommy brain) is 'less than 5, 5oz cups of coffee a day. It also says that babies vary in their sensitivity to caffeine, and the only way to tell if you're having too much is to watch your baby.

  • I have about 1 can a day....sometimes 2.

  • I had a redbull the other day, and my milk supply went down. I read somewhere that caffeine decreases milk supply. After that I am just drinking cup of black tea ( which is not more than 40-50 mg) my milk supply went back up and hoping it stays that way.
  • I have about 3-4 cans of Diet Coke a day.  Which at 46mg a can... it is under 200mg.  However, that is just because that is how many cans I usually have.  Also, I make sure to have at least 40 oz or more of water (I am not a water drinker!!!  This is the hardest thing in the WORLD for me to do!).

I would say I try not to have too many cans right in a row... one night I downed 3 cans of diet coke in 3 hours and it seemed like my baby was up for 4 hours and a huge terror that night and she was only 6 days old... 4 hours was insane for her to be up at that point!

ETA:  My milk supply is fantastic... almost too much.  So caffeine isn't doing any damage in that dept.

  • I'm actually drinking much less now than I was when I was pregnant.  I noticed that DS spit up when I had caffeine, so I have been avoiding it.  No real scientific reason for it.  (And DS is still spitting up, ha)

  • I haven't had any since the day I was induced (March 18). It hasn't really been on purpose, actually, but once I realized I'd gone about a week without it, I sent DH to the store for some caffeine free soda so I could quench my soda craving without the caffeine. I was an addict pre-pg, and probably drank too much of it during pg, so I'm using this time to just be "done" with it.

  • I have a few glasses of tea and maybe a coke. Today, all I have had is water but I will probably have a cup of coffee in the morning. I am drinking more than when I was pregnant and I had either a glass of coke or cup of coffee almost everyday while pregnant. I haven't noticed him being different today with no caffeine though.

  • i haven't been drinking that much caffeine because i'm not at work so it's not just there in my face.  unfortunately i haven't been drinking that much water either cause my pregnancy thirst is gone.

anyway, today i had a medium mocha frappe from mcdonalds. epic fail. either the caffeine or all the milk was waaay too much and the kid threw up at the next feeding. not spit up. threw up what had to have been everything in her tummy.  then she fell asleep so i dont think the caffeine bothered her.

  • There have been a few times I get a caramel mocha from McDonald's but I do it right after I feed him so the caffeine has a little while to get through my system before feeding him. And if I do that, I don't drink any Diet Pepsi. Otherwise, I have been drinking about 2 Diet Pepsi's a day, very occasionally 3.

  • I drink coffee after the first morning feeding, otherwise I wouldn't have energy to start my day!  If I have soda or more coffee in the afternoon, I try to drink it after I feed, just like if I have a glass of wine or a beer at night.  That way it has time to get through my system.  He hasn't complained about anything i'm eating or drinking so far!
