NSAIFR: Do you have fake greenery in your house?

Totally random question, I know.  I'm trying to spruce up our house a bit, and make it more 'home-y'.  A few years ago when we were selling our house, a realtor told us that fake greenery was totally 'out of style'.  I agree that some types look cheesy (like the ivy type w/ yellow-ish streaks in it), but I think some kinds can look nice.  It can help add so much color to a room.  We have tried various live plants, and always end up with bugs/gnats.  What is your take on the fake stuff?

  • I think it's all personal preference.  I don't care for the fake stuff.  I have live plants all over my house!  I don't really see the point in having them if they aren't real.

  • I'm not a fan, personally.  And now with DS we only have one live plant in the house, too!  Luckily we have a ton of windows, so hopefully it doesn't feel too un-alive :)

I think, maybe, it could be done right, with a good-quality silk - but so often people put fake plants in palces where live plants would never go (in a dark corner, on top of kitchen cabinets, or something), that it's not even remotely believable!

I do have one twig-type thing with white flowers on it in a silver bud vase in our bedroom (it was from zgallerie, but I'm not seeing exactly what I have) - but I don't think that's exactly what you're talking about.

Ditto. Fake plants = dust collectors IMO

As for getting bugs and gnats, do you always purchase your plants from the same place? If so, it's likely a problem with that vendor. If not, it could be the potting soil you are using. The only time we get bugs is when we get "bad" plants or soil. Ex. we bought two or three plants from a local university's horticultural school sale, all of the plants ended up with bugs and all of our other plants were fine.

  • Not a fan, personally. I think they are dust collectors and tend to look dated and a bit country, which is totally NMS. I like real plants and fresh flowers (though I haven't had those in awhile!)

  • i wish i could have live plants but my kitties eat them/play with them/destroy them, so it is an impossibility.  i have one fake arrangement  in my living room that i think looks really nice and adds color/style.  usually i find fake arrangements kind of cheesy looking but there are some nice ones out there.

  • I'm not into fake plants unless you're going to do something very artsy with it (like the stick/feather type arrangements or dried flowers etc). And even then, my opinion is it should be kept to ONE arrangement/focal point.

Agree!!! Fake plants just collect dust and cause an unhealthy house. I also agree that if you have a bug problem it's more likely a vendor problem. I have never had a bug problem.

Live plants are a natural air filter for your house. I would try replanting your current plants in new pots with new dirt.
