DH's grandma just passed away. The funeral service is on Saturday and it's three hours away. We'll for sure go to the funeral. But do we need to go to the visitation as well? It's Friday from 4-7 pm. My MIL doesn't think it's necessary. We are also driving my BIL to the funeral service and he is trying to figure out flights, ideally he would like to get in Friday evening. I'm not sure how to handle this. Would it be all right to miss the visitation if DH agrees? I'm happy to go and would if it's my family but DH's family does things differently...

This!
This.
However I understand the complication with BIL flying in Friday night and expecting to hitch a ride with you to the funeral. It's hard for LO to be in the car that long, especially two days in a row, so I would let this be 100% DH's decision. If he wasn't particularly close to his grandma, and his family won't shun him for years at missing the viewing, then I suppose it's okay to miss it. But keep in mind many people only come to the visitation, and some of them might ask where he is. So maybe only DH could go to the viewing, and then all of you go to the funeral.
