How dangerous can being around mold be?

I work in a very nice office, but we have been having a nasty mold type smell for awhile now. The smell comes and goes, but I know that just because the smell isn't always there, doesn't mean the mold isn't. Today the smell was just overbearing. I called the buildings office and the repair men came by four hours later, and of course, the smell was completely gone. The strong smell was probably about 30-40 feet from me. Do you think I'm in danger from this? I'm more worried about the baby. My grandfather almost died because of black mold a couple years ago, but he was actually in a crawl space where is was severe. What should I do?

  • i would request that they do more than just fix the smell.  regardless of being pregnant or not, there are some types of mold that are really dangerous to breathe in.

  • Not to be an alarmist, but I would be incredibly concerned.  Mold can be very very dangerous and prolonged exposure can be deadly.  I'd call every person I could get in touch with to come and remedy the problem immediately (not just the smell but the mold itself) and in the meantime I'd see if it's possible for you to work elsewhere/from home.

  • Call the Property Managers and insist on an air quality assesment to be done by a professional. I'm in Commercial Real Estate. This could be a very serious issue. Whether or not it is true... tell them you haven't been feeling well when at work. Also see if any other co-workers have experienced the smell or not feeling well too. Air quality assesments are kind of controversial, but there could be a real problem.

  • We have all smelled it, especially today. My boss called quite awhile ago about it and they never came up to check it out. I'm going to go down and talk to the building manager myself today. The more I think about it, and reading your comments, the more concerned I get. I can't work from home of even move where I work. I'm the receptionist, and of course, it's very close to where I sit.

  • Yeah, like I said, even if its not entirely true tell them you and several other people have been feeling sick. Unfortunately sometimes you have to freak property managment out before they'll do anything about it. If they think people are getting sick, their legal dept should advise them to get it check out right away... potential lawsuits aren't good for the vacancy rate.

  • Mold can make anyone sick. When I was 16 we had a fire at our house, and kept the frame part of my futon as my bed frame. It had mold on it that we didn't notice at first. I was getting sick all the time and my dad figured out that the mold was causing it. We replaced the futon frame with a normal metal bed frame, and turned my futon into a patio table :D

But I would definetly be demanding that they remove all of the mold.

  • My SIL had a late m/c because of mold. They did an autopsy of some sort on the baby to determine if the mold is what caused it. So yes, it can be very serious to pg woman. Don't let them just mask the odor.
