2nd Trimester

Are Plank Twists Safe?

Hello all, just curious if anyone knows if it's safe to do plank twists in your second trimester. I've been looking online and everything says planks are fine but none specify if the twisting in the obliques is bad.

  • it will certainly hurt quite a bit if you stretch too far! those muscles are so loose at this point, it might be good to avoid twisting moves

  • My doctor said if its comfortable, its ok to keep doing. That's a good general rule. If you feel pulling or cramping that is abnormal, then stop.

  • I still do planks and side bends and they really help me keep a strong lower back too.  Do you feel any abdominal discomfort?  I would ask your doctor, but mine side it's fine.  I think abdominal exercises are a concern due to the separation of stomach muscles.  I personally do not do sit ups of any kind, but know of women that have even after 20 weeks.

  • My yoga instructor told me to avoid twisting moves since month 4.  Ask you instructor for good modifications that keep you working hard.

  • Thanks so much for the great advice!!
  • I was told no twists at all by my trainer...No twists, no weight above your shoulders, no downward dog.  Its a small price to pay for an uncomplicated pregnancy.
