Need advice/help re:car trips

My poor little 2 month old screams the whole time he is in his car seat.  Problem is, we take him to my mom's every day while we work, and she lives half an hour away.  Needless to say, not fun for either of us, and I feel so bad because he can't soothe himself.  I have tried getting him to sleep before we leave, giving him a paci, putting a toy bar on his carrier, singing, everything!  Please tell me this isn't as bad as letting him CIO!  I am so worried I am doing him harm, but I have no idea how to fix it!!!!

    My LO hates the car seat as well!  I hate going anywhere with her.  I have to use the Baby Bjorn if I take her with me because there is no way that I can keep her in the seat the whole time I am in the store.  So I end up putting her in the Baby Bjorn to keep both of us sane.  You certainly aren't "doing him harm".  In time I'm sure both of our LOs will get used to it all.
