Hypothyroid

I got a call from a nurse with my lab results and she said that my TSH level is elevated.  I need to call back to speak with her after 1:00 and she wants to get me started on Synthroid right away.  Hopefully they will be able to answer my questions in a few minutes but I figure I will see what you ladies know . . .

Of course I used google and I found that when untreated it can lead to miscarriage and low IQ and developmental problems - it should be treated very early in pregnancy before you are more than halfway done with the first trimester.  Of course, I am more than halfway.

Basically, I am freaking out.  Anyone have any words of encouragement?  I am pretty sure I had my TSH levels tested a few years ago and it was normal.  Ugh. I am just upset that this wasn't found sooner - like when I told my doctor I was going to start TTC.

I appreciate any input . . .

I don't know if I will be much help for you.  They found my hypo when I was TTC.  They got my levels down but I had it tested again around 5 1/2 weeks.  They called around 6 1/2 weeks to say that it was up to a 6 and they needed to up my meds.  I guess just because it was normal before the BFP, doesn't mean it will be after.  All we can do is pray we caught it in time.

Thank you, I appreciate your response.  How often are you getting your level checked during pregnancy?

I don't know, she didn't give me the exact result in the message.  It is after 1:00 and no one is there yet . . . haha, I am so impatient.  I will let you know as soon as I do.

They are checking again in 6 weeks.  I am only being checked through my obgyn.  I am considering going to an endo.

  • I have a hypo and it went out of wack when i got pregnant. If they put you on synthroid you will be fine. I get checked every 3 weeks to make sure I am stable but if your thyroid is stable it doesnt hurt your baby. hopefully you will get your synthroid today and they will get your levels stable

OK, so I spoke with the nurse and she said my TSH is 7.410.  She said that number isn't terribly high.  I am going to start on 50 mcg of Synthroid today and they will continue to monitor me.  Thanks again for your input.

  • I found out a little over a year ago that I had hypothyroidism, and was put on 25mcg, then they upped the dose to 50mcg, I had blood work done yesterday at my first visit and they called today to tell me mine went up to almost 9, so they put me on 75mcg and they'll check it again in 6 weeks.

  • I found out that I had hypo when we had trouble TTC #1-- I took 75mcg of Synthroid everyday once I was diagnosed and continued to take it after my pregnancy. They usually checked my levels at every other appointment, so about every 8 weeks. I think that the reason that they want to catch any problems early is that the baby uses your thyroid until they develop their own. Try not to worry though-- 7-8 is not terribly high and should come down easily with Synthroid!

  • I have been Hypo since I was 13.  Just went to the endo today and they are going to follow my levels every 2 months, and get bloodwork to make sure that I dont get out of whack.  Also they are watcching me close for Diabetes since I have PCOS and thats an insulin resistant disease.  But no worries, MY endo was super excited for me to be pregnant !

  • Try not to worry!  Good thing is they caught it and now you can take care of it.  It depends on how high the TSH is.  I have been hypo years before getting pregnant.  It can be quite the pain in the butt especially during pregnancy.  As long as you get it checked out frequently, you will be fine!  My levels prior were 3.2 and I freaked because they should be below 2.5 when pregnant.  When I started hyperventilating, my doctor shared with me that the studies that show the increased risk in miscarraige and mental delays were from untreated and TSH 10 and higher.  So no stressing like so many of us like to do!  Feel lucky that your dr decided to look into it and you care take the best care of your little one. Big Smile
