2nd Trimester

Can't Eat Veggies!

I cant eat veggies. I'm out of my first trimester, where that was the only thing my body would reject. Any type of vegetable, cooked or raw, came right back up and created quite the gag reflex. I've been trying to eat them, even mixing them into food, and they still cause me to gag.  I know i need my veggies but i dont know how to get them!  Any advice or ideas?

  • I was the same way and am just now able to eat veggies again (most of them anyway, still can't stand leafy greens). I use olive oil and lemon juice on most of them. DH also makes me green smoothies but doesn't tell me what's in them - the not knowing REALLY helps. If that's not an option for you, I'd definitely still recommend doing smoothies. You can easily incorporate usually bitter raw veggies like kale and collards into them when you balance it  out with chunks of frozen mango, kiwi, and banana.

  • How about vegetable juices, can you keep those down? V8 is pretty healthy and can count as a serving of veggies. V8 splash tastes more like fruit juice but still has some vegetables is it. I'd give that a shot, you won't get the fiber you get from eating vegetables, but at least it will give you some of the nutrients.

  • Have you tried the Naked Juice, Green Machine? DS refused to touch veggies, but he'll guzzle that juice--it's all natural I believe, and has a lot of veggies--and fruit--in it. There's a red berry one also made by Naked Juice that has veggies.

  • Try some fruit instead. Baby carrots and ranch are good if you can eat that.
  • This might be gross, but.. went to a baby food class last night and we steamed Sweet potatoes and pureed in other steamed green veggies (like broccoli, which I thought would be gross) and carrots, red pepper... and the sweet potato taste was really strong and you really couldn't taste the other veggies so much.  Sort of like a mashed potato with veggies hidden inside.  Might be a gentle way to eat soem veggies (or try a soup!)

  • I just talked to my doc about the same thing.  I've been eating lots of fruit, and trying to put down simple carrots, snap peas, and cooked corn when possible.  My doc said she wasn't concerned given my fruit and prenatal vitamins but she did suggest juices.

I tried the Apple Green at Jamba Juice and it was pretty disgusting but the carrot looks manageable.  I think some of the V8 veggie and fruit are supposed to hide the veggie taste pretty well.

Good luck!  I would do what you can but not worry about it too much.  Your body will tell you when it's lacking something :)

  • Have you tried smoothies maybe? You could also try blending up fresh fruit and then freezing it and eating it like a dessert, it might trick your brain into thinking its not fruit and just sorbet or something.  my first trimester even the thought of fruit and veggies was horrifying to me (and I was a vegan!)  so eating was really hard.  And then one day, about three weeks ago I just started craving salads like nothing else. The first fruit/veg that I wanted to eat was pineapple, I went crazy about it.  It was so weird. It might just take a few more weeks until you want to eat them again.  Don't be too hard on yourself about it.  The baby is still going to get what it needs if you are taking a good vitamin.
