Unexpected name side effects?

Is anyone surprised with people misspelling your LO's name? My LO is named Reese and I thought I spelled it the basic way (hey, it's the same as "Reese's Pieces" and Reese Witherspoon), but I have had SO MANY people spell it Reece already.

I didn't realize I was subjecting my child to a lifetime of "My name is Reese. R-E-E-S-E).

I guess that happens with most names though - my name is Becky and I still say "Becky with a y"

Anyone else?

Re: Unexpected name side effects?

  • Strange. When I here Reese I think of it with an S.

I am always shocked when people spell Charlie as "Charley." I'd never even seen that before!

  • Aww- I love the name Reese- but can't imagine spelling it with a c. Maybe people just assume parents spell names differently now- it has become the "norm" I think.

I have had multiple people call my baby Athena. I think she will be forever correcting people- no its Althea NOT Athena. Poor kiddo. And of course she will forever get "oh- your parents must like the Grateful Dead". Yup- they do...but we also have Althea as a family name people- that's not the only place it comes from. Urgh!

  • People (even my family, who should know better because they got the birth announcement!) are forever dropping the final H in Hannah. I have never seen the name Hannah spelled without that final H and it's a pretty mainstream name, but at least 4 separate people have done it.

DH's great aunt is named Althea. Its such a cool old school name for a girl. I love it! Its a little distinction, but do you say it ALLthea or ALthea?

I have it both ways: People have asked me for years (and I can't imagine why), if my parents named me after the girl in the exorcist..yes, yes my parents named me after a demonic possessed kid that's head spins and she spews puke...wtf?

For Emeline thanks to Army wives every calls her Emma-lyn, when in reality it is pronounced Emma-line (like walk the line).

I wondered how you pronounced Emeline. Its much prettier as Emma-line then Emma-lyn.

As a side note, my nephew is named Landon, but when my sister says it with her nasally Long Island accent it makes me cringe. Its such a cute name, but she butchers it! It ends up sounding like Layndin with a really flat "a" sound.

  • Yeah, my poor son is going to be spelling his name to people forever. And I've had a few people mistake it for a girl's name, which is just odd.

Whatevs, though, I still like it, and his nickname is really simple, so if he gets sick of spelling his full name, he can always go by his nn.

  • Oliver is pretty straightforward, but I want people to call him Oliver, not Olly.  So I am constantly correcting people when they do it...I don't want anyone to get in that habit.

  • People are fine with his first name, but it seems no one can spell or pronounce "Deane".  I've heard "Dee-Anne", like a woman's name, more than once.  I realize Deen and Dean are more common spellings, but Deane was my mom's maiden name and that's how it's been spelled for generations, so it's not like I suddenly decided to get kreative.

  • Yep.. we have people spelling our Lily with two l's... People still spell my name wrong too. I'm Sarah... with an H!  I suppose she'll get used to it like I have. Kinda sucks when we have to correct my Fiances mother time and time again though.
  • I've seen Reece but only for a boy name.  Any girl's I know with that name is with an "s."

No misspellings for us.  Although H has called Kami "Willy" a few times and that's exactly the nickname I wanted to avoid.  Tongue Tied

Aw. Your LO's have beautiful eyes.

  • We had a package come from a distant relative with the name Payge on it. ::cringe::

Hells no. Other than that, no problems.

It's a soft "al" not "all"  I think that's why it gets mixed up so often. We fell in love with it when we talked about it- and when Adam learned it was a family name- it made our decision easy!

I grew up having to constantly correct the way people spelled my name, and it drove me nuts. There are no problems with Jack's name.

However every morning when I say hello to him, I say "Hi Jack!" and it sounds funny... you know... hijack!

  • I had kind of expected it but we are having problems with everyone calling her Sophia instead of Sophie.  She'll be fighting this one for the rest of her life!  Of course, my name is Stacie and no one ever spells it right- it's always y or ey or i.  Oh well, that's life!

  • A lot of old people call him "Larson". The minister who came from GMIL's church to the hospital to bless him called him Larson about 6 different times in the prayer. When he left H was like "Well I'm glad Larson is thoroughly blessed but I guess we better stop at a church on the way home to get our kid done!"! :)

  • It's so funny that you posted this today, because last night we found out that a huge chunk of hub's extended family think that our daughter's name is Lisa instead of Elsa!  Apparently his hard-of-hearing cousin spread the word, and my MIL is too timid to correct anyone.  Mike are I have been cracking up about it!

Also, my very sweet neighbor keeps calling her Elza.  :)

  • I think a lot of people can't figure out how to spell Mackenzie because of the -zie ending. They also think it's McKenzie or MacKenzie...to me those are last names. People constantly misspell Kristi. They use C or Ch to start and -y, -ey, or -ie to end it. Or they call me Chrissy or Kristin. And forget about finding personalized trinkets as a kid!

  • my LO is Bryson.....I've been asked several times if it's spelled Brycen....nope try Bryson....to me the "cen" looks hillbilly'ish...lol....idk...I've also got completely different names if they ask how LO is doing like people at work or whatever...they'll call him Braden, Bracen....close people

  • We get Kaleb quite a bit, instead of Caleb. And my DH & DS#1 get Carl instead of Karl. I still get Summer with 2 m's? or Summer with an O? NO just like the damned season.
  • We don't have a problem with our Oliver either. I'm pretty sure there are no alternate spelling out there for this name. We do get asked how to spell his middle name a lot though- Nicholas, Nichlas, or Nicklas. I was aware their were so many variations of Nicholas. Oh, I really don't mind the nn Ollie but my brother likes to call him O-lee and that just seems to rub me the wrong way.

  • there are a surprising number of people who have never heard the name Ezra.  and there have been a few people who see his name and assume he is a girl.  I'm like, "what?" just because it ends with an "a" I suppose.    it wasn't half as weird as most of the names I liked (anybody remember me wanting to name him Drexel?  I remind H of that like once a week...)  but lots of people say "Ezriah" or something similar.. like they want to add another syllable and people always ask us how it's spelled and I just want to scream "EXACTLY HOW IT SOUNDS!!!!" but I don't.  I do, however, shut it down with one of these looks Indifferent and a "it's from the bible.." when people ask "where did you come up with that?" or "did you make that up?"

  • I had one person ask me "is that Victoria with a c or a k?" ummm C but thanks.

SIL has Victoria Noel on her facebook and it kills me.  I want to correct her in the worst way that it's Noelle - like the girl's name not the holiday TYVM.

  • Since a lot of traditional boy names have become girl's names, everyone thinks Avery is a girl.

That's why I made his middle name "Paul." DEFINITELY a boy's name. Because if his name were Avery Taylor or something ambi-sex like that everyone would be hella confused.

  • I'm tardy to the party, but I wanted to participate.

No one can really spell Genevieve anyway, so we don't get too many alternative spellings - lol.  But I get the feeling people think it's weird that we call her Genna, spelled with a G.  It's basically her name, just shortened.  H's cousins call her Jenny, Evie, you name it they say it.  It's sooooo freaking annoying.  What's so hard about Genna?  I also got a lot of "oh, that's different" comments when people asked her name.  Genevieve is an older name, not something obscure or that we made up.  We named her after my aunt who passed away when I was 16.  I miss her every day and now I have a little piece of her in my everyday life.

  • I'm tardy to tha party too but I wanted to participate. I really didn't think that people would have an issue with Lyla even though most people spell it Lila but I keep hearing people say Layla and it bugs the sh!t out of me. No Layla has an extra a. We like that name but it's too trendy, that's why we went with Lyla. My name has a Y as the second letter (Cynthia) so I like that spelling better too.

  • This is a very interesting thread!  We're not having any spelling issues.  I decided to spell Bailey the "normal" way to avoid that even though I kind of wanted to spell it in a more unique way... but we're having unpleasant nick name side effects.  We call her Bails for short but my sister keeps calling her Haybails.  It is really annoying.  I told her that's not her name but she won't stop.  Jerk.
