Help with RSV

My sweet baby boy had his 2 week check up today and we were told he looks great and perfect but he was diagnosed with RSV which needless to stay scared both me and my husband very much. Especially when the doctor talked about the possibility of him stop breathing. I know it's a virus and we just have to watch him and ride it out but do ya'll know of anything we can do to help him with his symptoms? His poor little cough and stuffy nose just kills me. Maybe a humidifier or something?

Re: Help with RSV

  • My little one has a bad cold (luckily is negative for RSV at this point).  A humidifier helps, or I take her in the bathroom when I take a bath for the steam.  The best tip from the doctor is to put a drop of nasal saline in the nostril and then suck it out with the bulb aspirator.  Do them one at a time.  The saline really helps loosen up the snot and then you can get more out...it has helped the baby breathe better to eat and sleep.

Hang in there mama, I'm sure he'll bounce back soon!

  • I've never dealt with RSV, but we are profressionals at getting rid of DD's colds lately. At his age, here is what I suggest:

Incline the crib  mattress or whatever he sleeps in so he is always inclined

Use a cool mist humidifer (or regular if that is all you have)

Use some baby saline spray and use the bulb syringe to suck out whatever you can as many times a day as you can

Keep him hydrated, feed him more if you need to make sure he doesn't get dried out.

Give lots of snuggles and keep him upright as much as possible to help with drainage.

    GL!!

Good advice... I'd add that we used to have DD sleep upright in her bouncy seat (or something similar) when she was really little and sick instead of trying to incline the crib mattress - it was easier and portable round the house for naps. When you do the saline, put the drops in and wait a few min, then suction (like put them in first and then suction after you change the diaper) - you'll get more out this way. Also, before I felt comfortable using the Vicks right on DD (especially where your LO is so young), I would either use the J&J Soothing Vapors baby wash in the tub and/or put Vicks on a cotton ball near her while she slept. Be sure to stay on top of RSV - it can get very serious very quickly, but I'm sure your Dr mentioned that.
