which breast pumps and which bottles?

I'm planning to get a Medela pump, probably the Freestyle -- does that mean I have to get the Medela collection bags and the Medela bottles or are most things pretty interchangeable?  How does all of this actually work?

Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing...what are you doing?

Re: which breast pumps and which bottles?

  • With my limited pumping experience, I pumped to the medela storage containers then poured into bottles, but I was only able to pump a few weeks due to a week of funerals in my family.  I kind of shut down when my Mom died and dried up.

For this LO since I have a Medela pump and we preferred Avent bottles with DD1 I am buying this kit so I can pump right to the Avent bottles.  They seem to be rated well.  Our other preferred bottle choice is playtex drop ins, so I just poured right into the drop in from the collection bottle on the medela.  Once I get to the level of supply I can stock pile I may do BM storage bags, but I'm not going crazy buying that stuff until I see how I do.  MH is out of town a lot so I don't know how things will go with 2 kids by myself.

I'd assume a lot of the bottle brands make conversion kits similar to the Avent one, but I haven't looked into it since I already have a preference (and MH knows how to assemble).

  • I was told that I can use Nuk bottles with a Medela Pump in Style...don't actually have either, since they are on my registry, but I was told by friends that have kids that they are compatible.

  • I have the Medela PISA that has the pump seperate from the bag...I would recommend the one that is part of the bag if you go that route. It was a PITA getting everything out and all set up. I almost want to get the other one if it wasn't so much.

Also I used the Medela bottles (5 oz) and pumped right into them, popped a lid on and was good to go. They were most convenient to keep a couple in the fridge at a time for on the go. We also used drop ins and will again.

I would recommend the Lansinoh bags, much better than the medela ones. I never pumped into them but it wasn't a big deal. And they can hold 10 oz, so I used less once DS started drinking more.

  • I had the Medela PISA backpack and the pump worked great.  I pumped into the bottles it came with and then transferred to the Lansinoh bags at the end of the day to freeze.  I tried to hook the Medela bags up to the pump, but was always afraid the bag would slip off and I would lose all that milk.  For feeding I used either the Medela bottles or the Advent bottles and liked both.  We were fortunate that DD had no problem switching from bottle nipple to breast and back again.

This is what I did too.  I liked the Lansinoh bags much better than the Medela ones for some reason.
