I go in this afternoon for my first NST test. It's scheduled at the hospital several hours before my doctors appointment so I was wondering how long I should plan on being there. They said it usually takes longer with twins but didn't know how long they typically took. Should I take something to entertain myself?!
Re: NST Test - How long does it take?
It depends on baby... make sure you've eaten and had something to drink so the baby is active.
I sat around waiting for 20 minutes before she started moving to where I could feel her.
The whole thing took about an hour, no TV in my doctor's office but there was some nice soothing music...
I had to do it yesterday and it took about a half hour but it depends on the baby. They want to see 10 separate movements, so it's however long it takes you to click the button 10 times...
I had that kind when they sent me to labor and delivery.
I had the interactive one at the doctor's office yesterday, they had me click the button every time I felt movement. I noticed there was little mark on the EKG sheet when i clicked the button, i think it's just an added way to count how you perceive movement?
I have always been told that when they do a NST they are measuring fetal heart rate in response to his or her own movement, because a healthy baby will have natural rises and falls during times of movement.(https://www.americanpregnancy.org/prenataltesting/non-stresstest.html )
I never had to use a clicker with DS, I just laid there, but he was a stinker and a very mellow baby so he never passed under an hour. (They look for x amount of rises and falls, his HR wouldn't rise at all.) so I was there for on average 1-2 hours 2x a week. If you can, eat something and have some juice before going in.
I have my first NST of this pregnancy scheduled for thrusday at my doctor's office, I go in for it at 11:45 and I don't have my doctor's appointment until 1:15, and I am planning (and hoping) on being able to close my eyes and nap during the NST, but I am also bringing a book, I am planning on it taking a while.
I'm having twins too. I've done 2 NST so far.
First one, they found both h/b easy and it took 45 min.
Second one, they had hard time finding h/b and I was there over an hour - about 1 hour 15 min.
They gave me 2 clicker/buttons to push (left hand clicker for Baby A and right hand clicker for Baby
. I was suppose to push the right or left button depending upon who I felt move. But with my twins, its hard to tell. So I just guessed a lot.
