Name Advice

Hey guys! My hubby and I were thinking of using the name Liam Drew for our little boy. The only thing that I wonder is if it will be a little weird to have the initials LDS because of the LD part. I'm a teacher and hear the term LD a lot. Am I just being weird?

Re: Name Advice

  • I don't think anyone outside of the teaching community would make any connection.  It just took me a bit to realize what it could mean, to be honest.

  • *lurking* Unless you are mormon, I would stay away from LDS (Latter-Day Saints). I didn't even know at first what the LD part meant that you are referring too, I had to look it up.

  • Okay that makes me feel better! I just don't want to give him a name he will be made fun of for!

  • I would rethink it because of the LD connotation, as well as LDS, as PP said. But, also working in a school, I tend to overthink all the possible nicknames, inadvertent abbreviations, etc.

  • If you love the name, I wouldn't worry about the initials. I don't think most people would make that connection at all.

  • I am a counselor in an elementary school and I never would have related the two if you would have only told me the initials.  I say go for it!  I think it's a very nice name!

  • Heh, the first thing that came to mind for me was LSD, but I think you would be fine with LDS, I don't think anyone would make fun of him.  My cousin just named her son Brycen Anthony D****  BAD!

  • LDS = Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormon)

    LD = Learning Disabled

    Might I suggest Andrew instead of Drew for the mn? Or William nn Liam for the fn?

    Most people don't even know that Latter-day Saints are Mormons (I'd know, I am one!) so I wouldn't let that stop you.

    IMO, your son will be FAR more likely to have the LS be his known initials. I've never known anyone apart from authors to use only their first two initials together without the last name. I don't think anyone will put the LD together, and I don't even know what it is, it must not be common. I say, if you like the name, use it! Generally speaking, if a kid is going to get made fun of, they will, no matter how irreproachable their name or initials are.. Kids will just find something else, it's how they are.

  • Honestly, if you avoided names you liked because of the initials, you'd never find a name!  Of course, there are some I would avoid, like PMS, but LD or LDS? Go for the name you like!

  • I agree, I still wouldn't know what the "LD" reference was if PP hadn't said it, and I would never make a connection with the Latter Day Saints.

  • I dont even know what LD is...

    But I like the name :-)

  • I had no idea what LD meant until it was explained in PP.  And I def didn't think of latter day saints.  I like that name.  I say go for it and don't worry about the initials.  :)
