Stay at Home Moms

Advice please

For the last 5 months I have been working about 15 hours a week (two half days) as a dental assistant for my mom.  I really enjoy it.  I get to work with my mom and get out of the house a little bit.  The best part was that my father would watch my son while I was at work.  Due to medical reasons my father can no longer babysit.  My question is do I try and hire a babysitter?  I am fully willing to admit I am one of those freaks who will probably be worried the entire time I'm at work for at least a month of someone new watching him.  He is a very easy going happy baby but is so active already.  I feel like I would never forgive myself if something happened to him while someone else was watching him.  Also, I feel like my only option for finding someone would be a website like sittercity.  I have no friends with kids so I wouldn't even know who to ask for a recommendation.  Bottom line is I don't want to give up the money and time out of the house but I'm worried about finding someone good to watch him.

  • I'd say try it out w/sittercity or another site, interview and then be sure to check references.

Do any of your neighbors have children? Perhaps they could recommend someone?

  • I was in basically this exact situation except it was a friend watching my DS who could no longer do it.  I didn't know anyone else but got a few recommendations for in-home daycares from my mom's group.  None of those panned out (they couldn't accommodate our limited schedule) so I ultimately started calling centers and then touring the once who would take him part time.  I chose one based on price and we went there for a few weeks and I hated it (I didn't feel like they were paying any attention to him) so I started looking again and finally found a center with a director and teachers that I love.  For me personally, I feel better about having him in a center because of the regulations they have to follow and the comfort of knowing they will always be open, etc.

So I guess my advice is to do your homework and find something you are comfortable with but keep in mind that you won't be entirely comfortable until you have been going there for a while.  GL!
