Just curious... since J was born at 36w1d, and as a result we had to follow "late preterm protocol" and they were more concerned about jaundice, etc... I don't want to step on toes here
but kinda wonder about delays and so on.
So should I be using adjusted age? And what should I be expecting to differ if anything?
TIA! 1ht

Re: Anything before 37 weeks a preemie? (36weeker)
I think that early on his life, you may adjust for milestones. You might see him doing things a month or so later than other term kids, but there's a big range of normal so he could also fall within the normal range, you never know!
I would think he would catch up to his actual age after a fairly short period of time, but I'm not sure exactly what is typical.
My boy was born at 36 weeks 3 days. He had jaundice and feeding issues and stayed in the NICU for about a week. So far the only things I've noticed as far as a delay is smiling- he just started actively smiling (socially, not while sleeping) in the past couple weeks. I don't know how much of a delay that is really since every baby is different, but I know a lot of other babies that start socially smiling around 5-6 weeks.
I've heard different things from docs and experienced preemie moms on the adjusted vs. actual age for late pretermers, so I think it just depends.
Thanks! Doctor yesterday said that we don't need to use an adjusted age... we are still waiting on the social smile... but I think we are getting close.
I think we will see how it all goes!
I use adjusted age mostly just because I don't want to stress over milestones. If I don't even look for them until she's "ready" by adjusted age, then I get to be pleasantly surprised. Also, many of the sleep books say to use adjusted age which came in very handy when he sleeping/crankiness was AWFUL at 9 weeks (6 weeks adjusted) when everyone said it should be getting better.
Also, my LO was LBW so I spend a lot of time explaining that she was early because people thing she's a newborn or just a few weeks old even though she's really almost 4 months. She's barely 10 pounds right now and 21 inches long so she's a peanut.
