2nd Trimester

Movement/Heart Beat

So I have a friend who is about a month behind me and she says that she can feel movement at 9 weeks.  Not just movement but if she lays really still she can feel the baby's heart beat.  I'm wondering if this is true.  I think it is just crazy and there is no possible way but I really am not sure.  Just because I can't feel movement yet doesn't mean that other people might not feel it much earlier.  Just wondering if any of you have ever heard of or experienced this.

Re: Movement/Heart Beat

  • I am skeptical.  9 weeks seems too early for movement though I know there are those that swear they felt it really early.  As to the heart beat, my guess she is feeling her own.  When I am pregnant I can always feel my heart beat more strongly in my abdomen especially when laying on my back.

  • no way is that possible...it's HER gas and HER heartbeat!  i think the earliest i heard people feeling movement is 15 weeks...i didn't start feeling little "nudges" or "pokes" until week 17

  • I think 9 weeks is way too early, even if this is her 2nd!! I started feeling this baby around 14 weeks. And the only heartbeat she is probably feeling is probably her own!
  • Many dopplers can't even pick up the HB at 9 weeks.  She's confused.

  • I couldn't feel DS's heartbeat when I was 37 weeks pregnant. She's feeling her own. You can even pick up your own heartbeat on a doppler down at your uterus if you don't know what you're looking for.

I just saw my OB yesterday and he said most women feel movement for the first time between 15 and 20 weeks, a little earlier when it is their 2nd, etc, is possible. The baby is TINY when it is 9 weeks (really, 7 weeks) old. I don't believe she is feeling it. She's probably feeling gas, like PP said, or just digestion stuff going on.

  • That is way too early.  I had an u/s at 9 weeks and I remember how tiny that little bugger was...no WAY you could feel movement when they are that small!!  And the heartbeat is definitely her own...as pp said, I have been able to feel my own hb much stronger in my abdomen since I got pg.

I felt movement at a time that is considered early (16-17 wks), and I've never heard of anyone feeling it earlier than 14-15wks.

  • She's feeling her own heartbeat.
  • Thank you for all of the replies.  Your comments were exactly what I thought but wasn't sure since I'm on my first child and am not sure exactly what I'm talking about most of the time.  It was a little insulting to me for her to say she is feeling movement/heart beat at 9 weeks when I'm just now getting to the stage when I should hopefully start feeling movement in the next few weeks or so.  Thanks again!
  • very doubtful. its probably muscle spasms, and her own heartbeat.
  • I asked my doctor at my appointment when I was just about 15 weeks pregnant if it was too early to feel the baby and she said yes. The first time I know for sure what I felt was the baby was during my ultrasound last Friday at 18w1d and he nudged back when the tech was pressing kind of hard & have been feeling him since then.

As for the heartbeat, I just realized the other day that I could feel mine so strongly in my abdomen so I would think that that's what your friend is feeling.

I agree, when I was at my 12 week appointment my widwife couldn't pick up the HB with the doppler so she did an ultrasound for me. 9 weeks is way too early!

I started to feel flutters around 14-15 wks and I'm also pregnant with my second.

  • i don't know about feeling the heartbeat. that is a little impossible to me. but feeling movement that early. i'm on the fence about it. my sister in law and a friend of the family have both felt movement that early. but it wasn't their first. one is a very thin girl and the other isn't. so it might be possible. at 12 weeks she was asking me if i had felt anything yet. i was 15 weeks at the time. and hadn't felt anything. but apparently she felt him move all the time
