2nd Trimester

Has anyone ever heard of percocet during labor

My midwife mentioned this as a possibility to me.  I am really wanting to go without the epidural, and she said that she had given a patient 2 percocets before and it helped take the edge off of the contractions enough to get her thru to the pushing stage without needing to resort to the epidural or IV drugs.

  • I didn't think percocets were allowed for pregnant ladies, but I guess your midwife would know better than me.

    Is Demerol given orally?

  • I've been given percocet for migrains during pregnancy. I hadn't heard of using it in labor, but I guess I don't see why you couldn't.

Not typically and a lot of physicians don't give pain killers during labor because it can make the baby sleepy too. It can also make it hard to push at the end.

I'd be careful about taking any of those during labor. I personally cannot have Demerol and I had to make sure the nurses knew that because that is their go to drug after delivery.

  • Just a question- but why would you take percocet and not get an epidural?

Bc I detest needles, I literally nearly pass out every time I get a blood draw, and I hate the idea of being numb and not being able to move like you get with an epidural.

  • I've seen women get a Morphine shot in early labor to take the edge off.  This is given though several hours before delivery so they don't risk of potentially having a drowsy respiratory depressed newborn.
  • I really do not think narcotics help with labor pain.  Afterwards I can see but not during.

  • I got stadol during my labor with my daughter.  It didn't really help the pain as much as it helped me sleep between the contractions.  I did not want an epidural and was happy that the stadol helped me make it through the birth.  I liked that I was still able to get up and move when I wanted to and avoided any extra needles.

  • I think percocet would be pretty useless during labour since the onset of it orally can vary greatly. Most women who use narcotics during labour get morphine or demerol IV and well before baby is to be delivered. Narcotics given to late in labour can lead to a limp baby in respiratory distress.
