Regardless of prior delivery, I was told both my OB for my c/s and my midwife hospital practices that our bodies needed time to recover from childbirth, pregnancy, etc. So both of them recommended waiting at least 6 months before getting pregnant again, but stressed that 12 months was better for ensuring my body was "up" to being pregnant again. So that would suggest 18-24 months in between kids. Mine are almost 28 months apart.
In regards to VBAC in particular, my former OB mentioned at least 18 months between c/s and the next TOL. My midwife group never mentioned an optimal timeframe. I think it's all about the perspective of the provider, so you'll probably get a variety of responses here.

My OB didn't give me a time frame. I plan on talking to my OB about my desires to VBAC when I go for my annual in July and see what she recommends. We aren't planning on TTC #2 until DS is at least 15 months old anyway.
I can't remember if my doctor said 12 or 18 months between pregnancies. I don't know what my CNM would recommend now. Either way, we had no intention of TTC until DD was 17 months old, then it took 8 cycles to conceive this baby. At this point I'm definitely in the clear.

I don't know what my doctor would recommend or if he would have a cut-off point where he would feel VBAC would be unsafe. But he did make sure to ask how old my daughter was when we first met to discuss whether VBAC would be a good option, so obviously it's something he weighs in the decision. She was already 2 when I got pregnant so close pregnancies was not an issue for me.
We've had some moms on here have VBACs with closely spaced pregnancies so I think it's definitely possible and I don't think it should mean automatic RCS, but I do think there is a small increase in uterine rupture risk.

Re: I spoke to my OBGYN
I was told that 18 months are ideal, anything past 12 is safe and he would be fine with.
