Another live-out nanny question

Just because the ohter one is kind of far down the page, I have a follow up question for the people that were/are live-out nannies.

If it's not too invasive of a question, what was your hourly rate?

This is our plan, too, but I'm planning to hire my 18 year old sister to do it. She starts college in August, so the timing is great. I'm hoping to pay her a flat rate of $110 per week for three days a week (less than 24 hours per week). It's the same as what we would pay for the center we have picked out. Basically, the plan is that if that's not enough for her, we will opt for the center instead.

Re: Another live-out nanny question

  • I made a *** load as a nanny. I was making 15/hr and anytime i was the for a 24hr period, it was a flat rate of 150$. I was working and average of 50-60hrs a week.

Wow! Sheesh, we are not in that position. I guess our situation is different then because she is my sister. I'm probably going to go with the if she doesn't want the job, then we are going with the day care we found instead plan.

  • We also pay 15/hr, 135/day.  This is for both family members or non family.  Maybe it depends on the area?

  • I live in Oklahoma and am a live-out nanny. I work about 45-50 hours a week and I get paid $500 on the 1st and 15th of every month. That is a set rate so I get paid time off and paid vacations. When I lived in Virginia a couple of years ago I was getting paid $400 every week. So it definitely depends on the area.

Thanks! Your job now makes me think I'm not all that far off for my area.

  • I make $20 an hour, 30 hours a week. But I've been with the family for 6 years. Paid vacations, sick days, etc. It varies by region...and obviously different because it's your sister.

  • It definitely depends on the area! Here in MA you can go up and down the coast and the rates fluctuate wildly...I was making $15/hr in the more affluent suburbs...

We are looking at a Live- In for that reason...Cost of Living is horrendous...a 1 BR Apartment in Boston w/o Utilities is $1300/ mth so you can imagine how much one has to make to stay afloat...

  • From my research, price varies a lot by region.  In our area, I think $20 per hour is standard for a live-out nanny.

I know it's your sister, but $110 for 24 hours per week isn't even minimum wage.  If you take taxes and SS out, that puts her even lower.  If you don't take those things out, aside from possible legal issues, she could end up owing taxes at the end of the year and she doesn't get credit for working in terms of SS eligibility down the road.

Like pp mentioned, it varies by region.  Hourly rates range anywhere from $10/hr to $25/hr.  I am paid a salary.  I started out at $31,500 a year.  That is with 2 weeks paid vacation, sick days (which I've never taken), and I get off when they are home/on vacation and am paid the same.  Right now the little guy is in preschool 3 hours a day and I am paid the same.  I get hefty raises every year.  I recently moved to another state with the family (they paid all expenses to move husband and I) and I got a $7,000 raise to do so.  I make over $40,000, and will be bringing my baby to work with me.  However, I do have a teaching degree, so that is also why I started out making more than some.

  • I stopped being a nanny about 4 years ago (maybe less) and I think I was given about $10 an hour and then if the mother was out of town, I was given a flat rate depending on how long I would stay at the house and anything else I needed to take care of while she was gone.  I had set hours each day and when I had to stay late then I was comensated for that.

  • Another thing to consider is whether you are talking about their actual take-home rate or the rate including taxes (and I don't mean income taxes- but employer-required taxes such as unemployment, etc.)- we paid our first nanny $15 per hour but the actual cost to us went to upwards of $18 since we did everything above-the-table.

  • I make 15/hr for two children. I would at least pay her 8-10 an hour for one.
