2nd Trimester

Bridesmaid Dress Try-On

I am just about 5 months now and went to go order a bridesmaid dress today for a wedding I will be in mid-October (a little less than 2 months post-partum).

The sample size fit great (it was a size 10), even though I am sporting a nice-size bump now. It even looked more flattering than I had thought it would -the bride picked a figure-hugging dress. However, the ladies at the bridal shop insisted that I go up to a size 14 to order the dress. They said I can have it altered dramatically if it is way too big (they were actually urging me to order the size 16, based on my current waist size and what they "project" I will look like by October- my waistline has a basketball inside it right now, pretty much).

This is my first child, and I kind of thought how I'm measuring right now, at 5 months, would be about where I'd be at the time of the wedding. A little bigger than my usual size, but not too dramatic.

I am really unsure if I should change the size or not before the order gets sent in-for those who are 2nd time moms, did you find you bounced back to your regular size pretty quickly? Normally I would be about a 6/8, and the size 10 fit great right now.

The bridal shop did start talking about all these extra fees for extensive alterations, and I can't help but thinking that may have been part of their size "recommendation"...but I'm really not sure!

I am worried about having a dress that is swimming on me by the time of the wedding-but I've never done this before!

  • Go with your instinct. You know your body. I'm thinking you should go with the 10.

They always want to find a way to make more money.

  • My SIL was pregnant delivered three months before my wedding and went one size up. When the dresses came in she couldn't fit into her's because her rib cage had expanded and we couldn't get it zipped. If you would normal get the 10, I would at least get the 14 just in case. We were lucky able to swap her dress with another bridesmaid that lost some weight.

    Edit: She was a 10 before/during baby at 5 months and got a 12.

  • go with your instinct.  for my sister's wedding (not pregnant mind you) the store wanted me to order a sz 10 dress (normally i wear a 2, maybe  a 4) i went with what they suggested and the dress totally drowned me.  My friend ordered the 6 and of course i tried it on and it fit like a glove.  Honestly sometimes they don't really know what they are talking about.  You know your body better

  • A friend that just had her baby lost almost 30 pounds within two weeks of having her son.  I would say if you are normally a 6/8 and the size ten fit well at 5 months, then purchase the ten.  worst case scenario- you are very uncomfortable at the wedding with a dress that may or may not be too small.

  • I am in a wedding at the end of May and I will be 33 weeks pregnant. When I first tried on dress I am thicker on the bottom and have a bigger chest so they ordered me a 14 this was before I was pregnant. When I found out I was pregnant i went back and they made me order a 26!!! I cried and cried but she just kept saying you dont know how big you will get so listen to me I can always take it in Its so expensive an we wont have time to take it out...I just tried on my dress last week at 22 weeks and it was so big it fell completely off me and I was swimming in it. The dress lady said wow that is really big. I was so mad..So listen to yourself I wish I would have becaus now I am nervous I am gonna look bigger than what I need too be
  • I did this exact same thing last time I was pregnant (wedding was 5 mo. PP). I am normally an 8 sample size and ordered a 12 or 14.  It had to be taken in a lot in the waist, but the boobs almost fit.  You just have no idea how your body will change.  2 months PP, you may be sporting E's like I was. I woudl go bigger and take it somewhere else (cheaper) to get altered.

  • So I guess I'll share my 2 cents. This is my second pregnancy, and I lost all the weight  24 lbs about 6-8  weeks after the birth of my first one. My best friend is also having her wedding in mid October this year and I'll be 10 weeks pp also. I ordered close to my normal size, but one size up. So I'm normally a 2, and I ordered a 4, simply because of my chest size when BFing, i tend to grow B's into DD's:) haha, I'm not complaining!

I guess it also depends on the dress if it already has some 'give' in the fabric or if it's not very forgiving. Our dresses are flowy, chiffon dresses so they have some extra room to start off with.

I'm a little suspicious as to why they wanted you to order up so many sizes up when it sounds like you're already sporting a nice size bump and fit great in a 10. Personally I guess I would choose the size 10 or 12.

    GL!

  • If 10 is good now, I'd get a 12. That way, if you do gain a lot in your 3rd tri and have bit to loose at the wedding, you'll still fit the dress, and it's easier to alter down a 12 to a 10 then a 16.
