Rice allergy?

I have noticed a trend with my 8 month old. Whenever he has something with rice in it, he ends up vomiting it up later. It started on Christmas day with sweet potatoes (baby food) and rice cereal. I laid off both for awhile and then tried each separately. No problems with the sweet potato. I've only tried rice cereal mixed in to his food a couple times but it seems like when I do he will vomit later (usually at night) after I do. Last night for his dinner I tried organic peas with brown rice jarred food (along w a couple other things) and I just came in to find him covered in his own vomit. Allergy to rice? I've never heard of this but obviously now I need to do some research. His 9 mo checkup is next week so I can inquire then too.

Re: Rice allergy?

  • Have you tried other grains?  Maybe he is allergic to a specific grain.  My son can only have wheat, no oats or rice.

  • I haven't really tried other grains because I'm a little nervous!  I think I'm just going to hold off on all grains until next week at his dr appt.  I was doing more reading online and it sounds like rice allergies are pretty rare so I'm wondering if it's something else that I'm just not putting together...

  • DD would break out in a rash from rice cereal.   Her Dr. said he had had never heard of a rice allergy.  He thought maybe it was a preservative in the rice cereal. We stayed away from all products with rice until she was a year old. She has been fine with all other foods.  We actually just started giving her puffs a month ago and she was fine with them.
  • DS1 had that kind of reaction to anything with oats.  He grew out of it by 18 months.

  • Thanks ladies.  So far so good today (fingers crossed for tonight) and no more barfing.  I'm holding off on all grains until we see the doc on April 1.  I hope this isn't anything serious...

  • Okay, I am not trying to scare you, but please look-up information on food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES).  My 6 month old has this...  You can check-out my blog at www.whatseatingyou-fpies.blogspot.com to see if anything in our story sounds familiar.  This can be a really serious probblem, so please take the time to read about it.  KFA has excellent info as well:  https://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/resourcespre.php?id=99
