DD got hers in the hospital. We used the soothie they gave us in the hospital, but it was heavy and kept falling out. We switched to MAM which we used until about 2 weeks ago when the "bappy" fairy came and took them away.
We'll see how things go. I've bought a pack of Nuby. I want to skip it for the first few days or a week just to get things going, bfing wise, but if I'm miserable I might use it earlier.
Ideally, I want an easy to find brand. I was going to get some Soothies, but I can't find the damn things, so I won't. If I can't find them now, I don't want to be looking when I've got a baby hooked on 'em.
I want to wait a week or 2 until breastfeeding is established. I registered for a few different kinds so we will experiment and see what baby likes best.
I will introduce them once my milk comes in and DD has established a good latch. You really can't predict what kind they will take, but I purchased a pack of gumdrops, nuk, and mam pacifiers (my hospital will also give us a soothie or two).
Yes, right away so long as LO has no health issues or problems latching.
However, we tried right away with DS and he would never take one, and I nursed him successfully until 18 months. No nipple confusion there- he def knew which one was the real deal and which one was the silicone imposter, LOL.

I am planning to use the natural ones that look like this, not sure of brand yet. I will probably wait until I feel that we have a good breastfeeding routine established. I'm a first timer though, so I am just going from what I have read, not from personal experience.
I've read and heard that a lot of breast fed babies don't even care to have a pacifier. We're hoping this will be the case, but aren't 100% set on not using one. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

DS got one when he was in the hospital and I BF'd successfully for 8 months. Never had any issues with latching or anything else. He liked having a paci up until he was about 5 months old and then suddenly decided he didn't want it anymore. He hasn't had one since.
I will have one for this one as well and will probably buy whatever is on sale.
Also, I only let DS have it when we were out. I never gave it to him at home. They can be a lifesaver when you have a screaming child in a public place and nothing else seems to soothe them.

This. I was thinking maybe six weeks though? But as long as he's a good eater and is gaining all the weight he's supposed to then we shouldn't have a problem giving it to him.And I'm using whichever one he decides he likes.

DS hated pacifiers. We tried to give one to him right away (the day after he was born the hospital gave him a Gerber one), but DS was just never interested. It did not interfere with BF.
I really really hope this child will take a paci. I bought Avent, Tommee Tippee and Dr. Brown's pacis.

We started the paci at day 2 in the hospital when I was turning into the human pacifer. DS was also cluster feeding so the nurses used it at night to spread out the feedings so I could get some sleep (they asked and I consented - they didn't just do this without my knowledge).
We came home and DS gave up the paci and wanted nothing to do with it. We tried and we tried but he wasn't a paci guy. Now, at age 3, I'm happy we didn't use the paci because then you later have to deal with removing it.
with number 2 i'll try to the paci again to see if this LO wants it but we'll get rid of it around 7 months.
I figure once breastfeeding is well established, so a couple of weeks? We'll see how it goes. I would much rather have LO use pacifiers than suck his thumb. I heard that it's much easier to wean from a pacifier.

I've found soothies at Target recently so may want to try there...

We might get a Target by 2015 or so...
my options are limited by being in Canada. Thanks, though.
I'll probably wait at least a month, per recommendations to breastfeeding moms. I know plenty of people give their babies pacifiers prior to this without nipple confusion, and maybe I'll change my mind, but I don't want to introduce any unnecessary difficulties!

This. I used Nuks right away in the hospital with DS and we didn't have any nipple confusion at all.

I'm not worried about nipple confusion or latch.
I'm worried about milk supply. And based on the many, many "my milk never came in" posts around here, a little caution is probably a good thing.
