How full does your bladder REALLY need to be?

I have my anatomy scan tomorrow morning and at my last appointment they gave me a sheet with the instructions. They want me to drink 36 ounces of water at least an hour before the appointment and DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER -- bolded and underlined. They go on to repeat later that your bladder must be FULL or your appointment will be RESCHEDULED.

Apparently they are very serious about this, but I'm nervous -- I have the world's smallest bladder, I pee a ton, and I can't hold it very long at all. So for those of you who have had the anatomy scan already, how full was your bladder? Does it have to be at the painful, my-bladder-is-going-to-burst stage?

  • When I went for my anatomy scan they told me to drink 20 ounces of water an hour before. It was not as bad as when I drank 36 ounces for my last ultrasound. The only thing was I had to go to the bathroom right before I walked out the door. I could not hold it anymore. So I chugged more on the way there! Good luck tomorrow!!!!

  • When I went for mine, they told me to empty it before I went in. If they're telling you to have it full, and you pee a ton, I would drink most of your water in the morning, don't pee first thing like you probably normally do.

  • I was supposed to drink 32 oz and I only drank 24 oz (shh don't tell!)  Our place is pretty strict and gives you a big rule sheet as well. I too, alwayssss have to pee and was dying after just those 3 cups! Seriously, i wanted to cry LOL

Regardless, first thing the tech said was "oh yeah, your bladders full!" so it worked out fine.  I guess a "good pregnant lady" would tell you to follow the doctors orders but i'm here to tell you that I cheated a bit and was fineStick out tongue

  • In my experience, they always tell you to have a full bladder, but once you are called back, they will have you empty your bladder. What I do in the event that they say I need a full bladder is show up the required 20 minutes early and down a 16 oz bottle of water. It goes right through me, and it is all I can hold before I feel like I might explode.

  • Before my NT scan I drank a bottle of water...because I was thirsty, not because they told me too...She had me go to the bathroom first thing when she saw my bladder. I had to get up and go a second time durin gthe scan!!
  • Wow! They didnt make me drink anything at all and no one told me I had to have a full bladder...

  • I was told to drink 24 ounces before my appointment this morning. Honestly, in both of my pregnancies, they've been pretty understanding about it- even the time when I forgot (whoops) to drink water beforehand.

You don't need your bladder bursting, just make sure it's nice and full- that helps the tech see things more clearly.

  • I had to drink 32 oz of water an hr before.  I was about to pop and the tech wasnt very gracious when it came to being easy on my bladder.  Luckily they had a bathroom in the room and i ran to it right after lol.

  • I had a quite difference experience from everyone else it seems. My appt was at 3:00, I started drinking the 32 oz of water at 2:00 and finished before my appt. (My instructions were 32oz of water drank within the hour before your appt) The first thing she went to check was my cervix and could not measure because my bladder was not full enough. She told me if my appt was at 3 I should have started drinking the water at 1 and finished at 2 because it takes an hour to actually fill the bladder. So this week I have a follow up A/S and will be doing it this way. Apparently the tech I had was very serious about the full bladder thing. So I will more then likely be entirely uncomfortable until they let me use the bartroom!

  • When I had my first U/S at 11 weeks, the doctors office didn't tell me that I needed to drink water or not. I figured since it was an ultrasound, I needed to drink water. Anyway I drank alot of water and the U/S office was running late and I was miserable waiting since I had to pee so bad. I get into the room and she tells me to empty my bladder because it was an internal U/S!!! GRR

When I had my anatomy scan the doctors office told me to drink 32oz of water 1 hour prior to my appointment. I drank the full 32 oz and again the U/S office was running behind. I was in so much pain from having to hold it for so long I could barely move. When I got in the room, I asked the tech if I really needed a full bladder this time. She said that with the new technology it didn't need to be very full like years ago. Since I already had a full bladder she wanted to get a look at the heart and spine first and then she let me use the bathroom. What a relief!

  • I was told to drink 32 oz as well but the nurse advised me to drink 16 oz about an hour before the appointment or while I was getting ready and then drink another 16 oz on my way to the appointment.

  • It depends on where you go. My hospital only requires a full bladder for the dating u/s and the NT scan.

This! I've had five u/s so far (and the anatomy one is scheduled for April 21st) and never once have I had to have a full bladder! That would be really hard to do for a pregnant lady!

  • One of my u/s techs told me that they only require us to drink water before the initial dating ultrasound, and any subsequent scans you do not need to drink.  For my dating u/s I was supposed to drink 36 oz. and I only got to about 24, so I was honest and told her that and she was a real b!tch to me about it.  They got the scan just fine though - my bladder was full.

They give us the same instruction sheet every time about drinking 36 ounces of water before every u/s, but I was told to ignore that after the first scan as it is not necessary.  If you're worried about it, call and ask.

This. I was told I needed to have finished the water 1 hour prior to my appointment. However, I was also told I only need to drink 16 oz.
  • i drank 12 ozs of water and as soon as she saw the baby's heartbeat she let me go pee.
  • My office gave me instructions to drink 24 ounces for my anatomy scan.  (I hear you on the small bladder thing!)  I will be 19 weks at the time of my scan.

  • My dr NEVER said anything about drinking water before my anatomy scan (which is today). I've had an u/s before this one and wasn't told to drink any water. They always make me pee in a cup when I go so I drink water anyway to do that but nothing for the u/s. I do know they do it on a 3d/4d machine that is super clear even when just doing the regular u/s so maybe my bladder doesn't have to be as full? Don't know!
  • I have never been told to drink water before my u/s.  I had one with my daughter and have had 3 so far with this pregnancy.
