I have my anatomy scan tomorrow morning and at my last appointment they gave me a sheet with the instructions. They want me to drink 36 ounces of water at least an hour before the appointment and DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER -- bolded and underlined. They go on to repeat later that your bladder must be FULL or your appointment will be RESCHEDULED.
Apparently they are very serious about this, but I'm nervous -- I have the world's smallest bladder, I pee a ton, and I can't hold it very long at all. So for those of you who have had the anatomy scan already, how full was your bladder? Does it have to be at the painful, my-bladder-is-going-to-burst stage?
Re: How full does your bladder REALLY need to be?
I was supposed to drink 32 oz and I only drank 24 oz (shh don't tell!) Our place is pretty strict and gives you a big rule sheet as well. I too, alwayssss have to pee and was dying after just those 3 cups! Seriously, i wanted to cry LOL
Regardless, first thing the tech said was "oh yeah, your bladders full!" so it worked out fine. I guess a "good pregnant lady" would tell you to follow the doctors orders but i'm here to tell you that I cheated a bit and was fine
I was told to drink 24 ounces before my appointment this morning. Honestly, in both of my pregnancies, they've been pretty understanding about it- even the time when I forgot (whoops) to drink water beforehand.
You don't need your bladder bursting, just make sure it's nice and full- that helps the tech see things more clearly.
When I had my first U/S at 11 weeks, the doctors office didn't tell me that I needed to drink water or not. I figured since it was an ultrasound, I needed to drink water. Anyway I drank alot of water and the U/S office was running late and I was miserable waiting since I had to pee so bad. I get into the room and she tells me to empty my bladder because it was an internal U/S!!! GRR
When I had my anatomy scan the doctors office told me to drink 32oz of water 1 hour prior to my appointment. I drank the full 32 oz and again the U/S office was running behind. I was in so much pain from having to hold it for so long I could barely move. When I got in the room, I asked the tech if I really needed a full bladder this time. She said that with the new technology it didn't need to be very full like years ago. Since I already had a full bladder she wanted to get a look at the heart and spine first and then she let me use the bathroom. What a relief!
This! I've had five u/s so far (and the anatomy one is scheduled for April 21st) and never once have I had to have a full bladder! That would be really hard to do for a pregnant lady!
One of my u/s techs told me that they only require us to drink water before the initial dating ultrasound, and any subsequent scans you do not need to drink. For my dating u/s I was supposed to drink 36 oz. and I only got to about 24, so I was honest and told her that and she was a real b!tch to me about it. They got the scan just fine though - my bladder was full.
They give us the same instruction sheet every time about drinking 36 ounces of water before every u/s, but I was told to ignore that after the first scan as it is not necessary. If you're worried about it, call and ask.
My office gave me instructions to drink 24 ounces for my anatomy scan. (I hear you on the small bladder thing!) I will be 19 weks at the time of my scan.
