Feeding/Sleeping Questions

I feel very lost when it comes to feeding. I don't know how much or how often. Since Kindle has jaundice, the doctor said to feed her every 2 hours with 1 oz. formula and 1 oz. breast milk. We've been waking her up in the middle of the night every 2 hours to continue this. But, her numbers are finally dropping. I've noticed that she gets hungry sooner now.. so I'm wanting to start feeding her maybe 3-4 oz. I don't know if this is normal? Last night she didn't wake up (and I didn't either) at the 2 hour mark. I finally woke up at the 3 hour mark and had to wake her up to eat.

Do you let your baby sleep until they wake up or do you wake him/her up in the middle of the night to feed?

I'm so lost!

Re: Feeding/Sleeping Questions

  • We wake our LO up every 3h to breast feed him.  Initially it was to make sure he was gaining weight, but now it's to regulate my milk supply.

  • I am FF, but if he's hungry an hour after eating, he's not getting enough so I up it. If he projectile throws it up, I back down again.

If they are hungry, you can feed them more or feed them more often. Newborns' tummies are so tiny that you can't just feed them as much as they'd like to eat sometimes, so you just have to feed them more frequently.

  • Is it ok to not wake her up in the middle of the night? I mean, I would just assume that when she's hungry she'll let me know. But, I could be wrong.

  • I would keep waking her a bit longer to make sure your billi numbers are coming down to normal for sure. Jaundice can sneak back up on you sometimes. Also you normally would want to keep waking to feed until they are back at their birth weight.

I wouldn't increase her by 2 ounces at once though, maybe increase by 1/2-1oz each feeding and go from there. Her stomach is so little and she doesn't need too much at one time. it can cause gas and a stomach ache for her if she eats too much. Sometimes if babies aren't getting enough to eat they sleep more and you'd think they would just wake up to eat but that's not always the case.

Ultimately though, your pediatrician knows about your situation and Kindle's condition, you should talk this over with them to make sure she's getting what she needs. It gets easier though, trust me!!

  • As your pediatrician if you need to be waking her every 2 hours at night.  Ethan had jaundice and I had to wake him every 2 hours and breast feed, then supplement with formula, but when we went to check his bili levels, the pedi said I didn't have to take him every 2 hours, but not let him sleep past 4 hours without waking a feeding.  Since I've been home, I feed on demand, but I'll be going back to work in a couple of weeks and I feel so lost as to how much he will need for the bottle.

  • I feed our LO every 2-3 hours or on demand, whichever comes first. The past two days she has been cluster feeding so she has been on my breast about every hour during the evening. Sometimes I will let her go 4 hours at night, but I try to keep it 3 at the most. She also had jaundice and the pedi said to keep feeding her so she has plenty of dirty and wet diapers.
