Moms of toddlers

How do you discourage whining?  Whining is a pretty big pet peeve of mine, and I have noticed Aubrey doing it more and more.  I think part of it is because she is trying to communicate, and getting frustrated, but I don't want to encourage whining.  She's starting to pick up on more and more words, plus she does a lot of pointing for what she wants, but the whining thing isn't cool.  So I am just looking for some ideas to keep this from becoming a commonplace in our house.  Thanks :)

I have seen this in parenting magazine. It works for one of my friends too; granted her DD is older. Don't acknowledge her request unless she uses a normal non whining tone. Tell her you can't understand her unless she isn't whining etc.

We ignore whining as best we can - same goes for full on fits.  Once she settles down, we acknowledge her and try to figure out what it is she wants.  A few signs have really cut down on our frustration as she's learning true words - food, milk, please, etc.

Mitchell whines a lot too. Drives me nuts.  I try ignoring him, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

So glad to know I am not the only one. It drives me nuts! Hopefully it will subside when she learns a few more words.

We do this too. Actually I just had to do it in Publix yesterday morning when he threw himself on the ground screaming as soon as we walked in. I just walked away {a safe distance, but to signal that I wasn't going to acknowledge his tantrum. I swear he was trying to make a scene}. Oh the lovely stuff of toddlerhood...

And KKH, alright now. Can I just eat Sarah up please? Seriously...that kid is so stinkin' cute!

You are not alone with the whining. I can't stand it either! I pretty much tell Lyla when she can talk to me like a big girl and not whine I will listen to her. It works most of the time.
