death of a parent during pregnancy

I have a friend who just lost one of her parents, unexpectedly, and she's 12 weeks pregnant. They were very close. Have any of you experienced these kinds of events while pregnant, and if so, do you have any input, based on your experience, as to what might be helpful for her right now? I can't even imagine how painful this must be for her.

Re: death of a parent during pregnancy

  • We lost MIL the day after DD was born.  So not the same, but the emotions suck either way.

Things we did to cope: in going through MIL's things, we set aside specific pieces of jewelry for DD; we used a good portion of our inheritance and put it in a 529 for DD so Grammy could pay for college; we incorporated MIL's name into DD's name; I did a huge slideshow for the memorial service.

The hardest part for her will be any regrets she has since it was unexpected. We were lucky enough to know MIL's time was coming so we spent every spare second with her. Remind your friend of the good times and the happy memories and let her talk about it, cry about it and be angry.
